I keep hearing you can rent a ball joint press from Autozone. Well I went down to mine today and they don't rent them out. Nobody else does around here either. I'm planning on doing my ball joints tomorrow and really don't want to spend $100 on a tool that I'm only gonna be using once. Anybody have any other ideas of places that would rent them out?

I think Pepboys rents tools out as well?

They might call it something else. I vaguely remember looking at their list of rentals and seeing it called something other than a ball joint press. If you know what they look like, ( ~a big C-clamp) maybe you can identify it that way.
Also, Harbor Freight has them cheap, if there's a store near you.

Its a ball joint press and adapter kit for 4x4. It may be labeled as a U joint press too.

Any auto parts store I have ever come across rents them out, you have to leave a $100 deposit.

Also I said the same thing as you once, why would I buy one when I can just rent it and I am only going to need it once, well I have rented one about 12 times since then and wish I would have just bought one because it is a handy dandy sucker to have, you can lend it to friends, use it for pressing anything ball joints u joints, it would be handy to have :)

They are $30 to $40 at Harbor Freight. Knockoffs of the OTC tool. Nicely done.

i just bought a harbor freight set a little while back. looks dead on like the one i rented from autozone. i paid $39 for it on special from like $49.

on that note... i called the same autozone about 8 times to check if theirs was back and half the time the person said they don't rent those. i picked it up from them later that afternoon. and yes, once i had to tell the guy it was a big metal c-clamp thing in a red case with some other little round metal pieces.

Alright I'll try again tomorrow. Didn't know Harbor Freight had them. That's not a bad price at all. The person probably didn't even know what I was talking about, he had to go ask another person, both of which didn't look like they knew too much about it.
