I am new to the site, would appreciate help solving my problem. Have a 1992 Explorer -Eddie Bauer 4x4. The 4x4 will not engage. Was told to bang on electrical unit which is mounted on side of transmission because they do stick sometimes. This did nothing. What would be the first step suggested to try and get 4x4 operating again? I bought the explorer new so I do not want to get rid of, it is in excellent shape in and out.

You can rebuild the shift motor:

Try and fix the module:

Shift it manually into 4x4 or 4lo with vice grips/channel locks after taking off the shift motor.
