All of the AC units use vacuum for opening certain internal doors.

That's what I thought, but according to the gist of the thread the 2WD SOHC may not. Or it does not use a vaccum reservoir, relying instead on vaccum switched directly from the manifold. Aldive's vehicle apparently does not have a vaccum driven vent door.

This would mean that the vaccum does not drop on WOT and 4WD SOHC like it does on the OHV and other engines, or the penalty in the vent door and heater valves opening is acceptable during these conditions.

Psychic!

Also post #14. Posts 13 & 17 show the vacuum driven vent motors on other explorers.

sorry guy, mine is a 4WD and i've never seen this thing, dug into the fender a little more and no find.

A brief look at the thread puts it in the 98's SOHC but not the 97's or 99's; except for a Polish '97 (#25). On the Rangers it's behind the outboard passenger kick panel. Short of a survey of all explorers in the target years, either the reservoir is somewhere else or for some reason it's not needed.

I'll just flag it as another one of those Ford mysteries until I come into contact with a '97/'99 SOHC and can tear it apart.

I'm still betting that it is in absolutely all models, people are just not finding it readily. It's there, look again.

I think it's a minor enough item that has existed forever, it's taken for granted. Every Ford I've owned has had one. It's a vacuum reservoir container, basically all vehicles have them. Regards,

If its there, why doesn't Alldata show it?

What does Alldata say about the vent or recirc door and heater control valves? Maybe some model years just don't have them.

Not all of them may be a round globe, but chances are that it is black plastic and will have a vacuum line going in and out of it. The ones in first gens are torpedo shaped.

Is there such a thing on SOHC V6 trucks, or is it a V8 thing?

Thanks ....
Yes

Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). For additional information, refer to «Section 414-01».

Remove the air cleaner assembly. For additional information, refer to «Section 303-03».

Remove the screws. Position the air cleaner housing mounting bracket out of the way.

Lower the vehicle.

Note:
The vacuum hoses to the vacuum reservoir are not interchangeable. Note the location of each vacuum hose to make sure of correct installation.

Label and disconnect the vacuum hoses. Remove the vacuum reservoir

My 98 sport 4x4 is in the same spot as Chrisis' 96.

I'm starting to think it's a 2wd thing if it's not there....

Al, look at your passenger side fender liner for those two bolt heads he circled. Tell us if yours are filled.

This has got me curious as all get-out!

Find it yet Al? I am very curious as to what is up.

does anyone know the part number for the vacuum reservoir (black globe thing).
i cant seem to find it on rockauto.com or trademotion.com (fast parts network).
or, does anyone know where i can buy a replacement.
i was in and accident that damaged the front passenger side and knocked the vacuum reservoir loose. it must have been sitting on an exhaust pipe because its melted pretty bad... no my heat is stuck on defrost.

The globe is located between the right fender and the inner fender. I just remounted mine this past week. It's well hidden;

Don't know the part # but I paid 20 bucks for mine a year or so ago at the Ford dealer. You might find it cheaper online though.

Al, I looked at mine last night a little closer....

Here's approximately where the lines ran on my 98:

718314.jpg

The little black plastic lines were below the AC line in that picture, they ran straight front to back, and made a 90-degree curve to the left and into the reservoir. The reservoir mounts to the plastic liner using the two screws through the 'feet' of the globe.

Can you take a picture looking straight down from directly above that area I circled?
