Fortunately, they can't mess with interstate commerce. You aren't even legally required to stop at the agricultural checkpoints.

I can see it now... Cali's next big green movement. Installing customs checkpoints at it's interstate borders and initiating 100% vehicle inspections on all commercial and non-commercial traffic to check for contraband smuggling. Protect the environment by creating long lines to enter the state, and creating more emissions related pollution as a result. To help pay for all of it, they'll be imposing tariffs on all legal goods purchased out of state and brought in.

Wouldn't surprise me if that was soon followed by an emissions testion station at each checkpoint with mandatory testing for all out of state vehicles seeking entry.

Gives Cali Customs a whole new meaning.

That's 100% s***post, bit I can imagine some environmentalist trying to sell the idea and certain bureaucrats actually proposing it.
You're not far off. The California clean truck check requires registration of out of state diesel trucks and periodic testing.

Found out you cant register old diesels commercially without 2010 or newer engine or retrofitting some stuff. Stupid. There goes my hopes of regging a 7.3 ssrvice bed

That really sucks.

I have to bring our diesel in for emissions yearly. It's a PITA!

Yes Colorado started doing that also, yearly opacity test on diesel exhaust …$100-200 a year at private shops with dynometers… what a scam

When we moved to north Idaho I discovered where all the old 5.9 and 7.3
Trucks still live and are hiding..shhhhh

Tail pipe emissions programs are a joke! Another good idea that was ruined before it could do us any good. Lookup data about how many vehicles on the road today are even old enough to be “gross polluters” something like 98% of vehicles who go to emissions pass… so that whole thing is there to catch what 2%? And much of the time that’s a simple mistake when they test the gas cap or push the wrong button…

/rant

I’m
Glad everytime I come in here and see that the 4 banger is still going :)

Only restricted If you stay in California (others playing similar games to now co, wa, etc)

Or start voting for change!!!
California is broken on so many levels

For all the emissions and pollution they are saving by getting old 7.3 off the road it just takes one Tesla to burn up, one train to de rail into a river or one big industry fire… to destroy all of those efforts…

Our Ram still blows less than 10x the acceptable limit. When a vehicle blows that clean it should be exempt from the next years test.

The only place I had been driving the Pumpkin to for three years in a row was to the emissions test facility. I got sick of it and the Pumpkin is no longer registered. They won. :(

Also not a fan idk if AZ does this too but the sniffer fine but now theyre testing the computer too if it passes the sniffer whats the big deal? And the CARB certified stuff costs more but again whats the issue if it passes the sniffer!

Yeah you can register them out of state! That does work too. And personal registration works fine its just commercial it seems.

Its hard to deny that CARB has cleaned up the air since definitely not as bad as when I was little, but now it feels just nitpicky hahaha. Theyll get ya for the dumb things

What weve done here is register them personally. A neighbor has a Dirtymax another neighbor has a 7.3 so theyre still here just now registered differently :) Just a pain now haha.

What I will say is it only applies to >14k GVWR it seems. Which now makes sense why the 2500s can be registered fine some 3500s but the 4500s and 5500s are nto able to. I just know that they said no to wantign to reg a 7.3 F550 with a service bed.

Anyways ending my thread hijack.

Clean air is good!
Big Government green programs are always so full of bs they miss the target, great idea, poor implementation

If the GVWR is under 14K and it's older than the emissions testing year, not sure off the top of my head, think 1996 you could register in your name without needing to comply with the newer motor

Yes sir that is true. Was looking at an 02 550 though.

@BKennedy I have heard there are new rules in CA regarding RV emissions. Is that just for new rigs, or does it affect the older ones too?

Yearly testing for diesel RV's with a GVWR of over 14,000 pounds. Pretty much any diesel RV other than a van. It's ridiculous. There are not enough RV's, and they are not driven enough, to make a difference in lowering emissions.

I looked through the CARB guide for the new laws and didn't see any year cutoff, so its all of them.

Glad mine is gas, or it would be registered in a Arizona a lot quicker than planned.

I've done short drives with two or more stops twice over the past few days. No codes.

Daughter's F150 has a leaking oil pan. She is going to take the Ranger to work while it's being replaced under warranty. One-time use plastic oil pan. She drove the Ranger for about ten years so her putting some miles on it will be a good test. If she doesn't notice anything, then they can sell the BMW and I'll be done.

Tomorrow, I'm going to do a trans pan drop and filter change, and change the leaking AC line and recharge the system. After it gets driven a few hundred more miles, I'll change the engine oil and filter.

Make sure you have the tool :
/ fitting for refilling that f150 trans

I'm working on the Ranger, the F150 has an extended warranty.

It's all just a scam, a money grab.

There is no other reason for going after agriculture busses and RV's. They are not a large enough group to make a difference. Just like small engines.

I noticed something that's been bugging me ever since I saw it while reviewing pictures. There is a small oil port on the front of the Fusion head. The Fusion timing cover blocks the port.

The Ranger head is different in this spot with no oil port, but a much larger opening for oil to flow through.

The Ranger timing cover appears to partially block the oil port on the Fusion head.

Should I have plugged that port?

Should I not worry about it?

I'm concerned there might be a issue with oil flow to the heads with that port open. I was also thinking that deleting the VCT and balance shaft and blocking their ports would push more oil up to the heads. I've also run the engine with the oil fill cap removed and can see quite a bit of oil flowing, and it even blows out oil of the opening.

Plugging that port with the engine in the truck will be a major job. I would have to remove the crank pully, belt, fan and fan clutch, intake, valve cover, AC compressor, alternator and their mounting bracket, and lastly the timing cover. Would also have to retime the engine and use a new crank pully bolt.

There isn't any information on line because apparently nobody swaps Fusion engines into Rangers with any frequency. I did read a thread on the Ranger Station where someone was asking how to plug a port in the same area on a 2.5 block.

410 basically told me in a PM not to worry about the open port if there is good oil pressure and its running good. It's possible it's a drain and not a pump channel, which would mean it really doesn't matter because it will drain across the cam chains and into the pan. It runs very well and has oil pressure, so I'll not worry about it.

I am OUT of the AC business. I bought this four-hose manifold

I printed out detailed instructions for using a manifold to purge and charge a Ranger AC system off the Ranger Station and followed them to the letter. It seems fairly straightforward, and it started out great. I pulled vacuum on the line to drain the system completely before I replaced the leaking hose. That worked fine, replaced the hose after a little trouble getting one end to push all the way on. Then I pulled vacuum again and let it run for 30 minutes. Turned off the vacuum pump for 10 minutes with no drop in negative pressure which means no leaks. Then I went to use the can pierce hose attachment that came with the manifold. It sucks. It doesn't allow the can to push enough pressure into the manifold to charge the system. The instructions could be better, since there are virtually none included. I wasted three 12 oz cans of R134a trying to figure out how to get it to allow full flow, thinking it might be a bad can or two, or three. I filed a return with Amazon and will make an appointment with my local shop to charge the system. Maybe it was me, but I don't think so. It certainly isn't worth the aggravation to make any further attempts at something I would only ever do on rare occasions.

I spent all day on it so never got the trans fluid and filter and fuel changed. Hopefully, I can get through that tomorrow without any major problems.
