brake issue (possibly)

Here's something a little different...I get a thumping from my front left brake when depressing the brake peddle, but when applying different pressures to the brake peddle it will almost fully stop...Here's the kicker!!!...when I engage the 4x4 the symptoms disappear altogether, even when I turn off the 4x4 and leave the hubs engaged the symptoms are still gone, but after I reverse and unlock the hubs the symptoms return...I need help on this one....

have you checked the radius arm and pivot bushings?

I should get it looked at "again" , but the garage did say (they..and everything else) was o.k....when in 4x4 it tightens everything else up, definately a bushing of sorts...just which one???

Are the hubs themselves bad? Something like that that goes away when the hubs are engaged almost sounds to me like the hubs themselves need attention. Are they full of grease (too much grease is bad)?

no they are moist with tanny fluid. the left hub does sound to scrape a bit when engaged nothing too serious though, I think it is the rad bushings because when I go over a light bump I feel the notorious thumping under my feet almost. I do have new rotors on there but if that one is even slightly warped then every time the pad grabs the disc the rad arm will get torqued and thump around inside the loose bushing...does everyone agree with that diagnosis????

I ran the 4x4 for a while in the city(it's snowing today) and the symptoms are fading...I think you are right Mr. Shorty...I'll keep you updated

i had a similar problem and found it to be the brake pads were sloppy in the brackets causing a thumping noise when lightly braking. what happens, the pads would just kiss the rotor and move causing the noise. just something else to look at.

thanks exrange... I just had the pads put on a week ago or so by a garage....maybe I should get them to check the pads. Now that I have set the parking brake a few times it has seemed to have tightened up the rear shoes and now the thumping is at a minimum....I'll end up putting it in the garage and saying"get rid of that noise"....we''ll see

Just had it rechecked and it turns out the left lower balljoint is shot and that is creating the thumping....universals on the front aren't the best either so that might contribute to the thumping a little but I doubt it....so there it is folks, lower left balljoint...check yours if you have these symptoms....later,nas
