Breathers for diffs.

I have been wanting to get some breathers for my diffs. similar to these Dead Link Removed . On Dead Link Removed , number 4 says that old style VW fuel filters work well for breathers. Are these the what they are talking about Dead Link Removed

Besides keeping dust out, do they help keep water out? If they do I might have to try and find some (any reason to goto the pull-a-part yard lol)

Yeah, they will help keep water out but only if you have longer vent tubes and mount these up higher, like the engine compartment.
 






Which one would you guys use, the VW filters or K&N Crankcase Breather Filters? Help me out, Bryan.
 






Those VW filters look more like inline fuel filters. But i guess it would work if you wanted it too. Of the two i'd use the K&N or you could probably go to an auto parts store and pick up another cheapo brand and get the same use out of it.

While this will HELP to keep water out, you just have to remember to cover them up if you are going to wash off the motor if you store them under the hood. Another thing to remember is if you get them wet out somewhere on the trail then you hit a dusty road, it's going to clog up the filter so you may have to check to make sure it doesn't plug up completly.
 






One thing to think about with a vent filter is that it is exactly that -- a vent.

It is only to allow the hot oil room to expand so that it doesn't blow out seals. It doesn't really suck in and out, except when you suddenly cool a differential by driving it into water, and then only for a breif moment or two. The factory just leaves the end of the line open in most cases, or sometimes puts on a little cap to keep crud from getting into the end of the vent line. Any serious filter will be overkill. Just put something on there that will breath and it will be fine. (Like those cheapy import valve cover filters)

I dont have any thing on the end of my breathers. And I've had no problems.
 






So should I just extend them and not put anything on them??
 






Ill tell you how i have mine, mine are(3 lines) are all ran together into a t setup, and at the end i have a filter, it may not be needed, but mud wont get into the lines as easy, sure it still can but not as easy..... let me look and see if i can find a pic of my setup, i dont have one of the filter on it, and i cant go take one, since my camera got stolen, but next time im at my brothers ill take some for you....

Here in this picture you can see it, all the way to the left, on the other side of the bracket you see another thingy(dotn know how to describe it)..... That is where i mounted my filter....

I think most people are running them without any filters. I would use something if I could find it cheap. I didn't see the need to spend $15 or more on filters when they don't come with them from the factory.

Those are mine. That was one of the first mods I did to my explorer since one of my favorite places to wheel has water crossings. They are K&N crankcase filters. I got them at a speedshop long before places like autozone had the little ricer filters. If I would do it again I would just use those cheap little ricer filters from a place like Autozone. I have the filters on there because they help keep water from just going down the hose and second it keeps all the dust and dirt out. Being under the hood those filters get filthy.
