Broke 1 bolt from my rear axle

what to do? are the bolt attach to the rotor only, or do i have to replace the whole axle shaft? thanks.

I assume you mean a wheel stud?

If so, that should be replaceable. You may have to pull the axle shaft to get enough room to press out the stud and put the new one in.

Maybe someone will jump in here that has had to do it.
 






you are dead on, you will have to remove the diff cover and the C clip that retains the axle shaft (assuming its your 99 with disc brakes and you said rotor) then you can pull the shaft out and replace the stud, a cheap part that requires a bit of labor to replace.

You will need new diff fluid and its a good time to replace the wheel grease seal on that side while you have it apart.
 






I've been able to remove the wheel studs with out removing the axle shaft. it takes a bit of work to get them in and out but it's definitely doable.

Just guessing here but- you could remove the bolts that hold the dust shield on behind the axle flange, rotate the shield out of the way and beat or press the stud out. Put your new stud in, put a bunch of washers or an even larger lug nut on the stud, then use a lug nut to pull the stud into place. Some oil or grease on the splines of the stud may help ease it in there.

Getting the old broken one out really shouldn't be much of an issue, since it's broken and, therefore, short. Should be able to punch it out and have it drop through the gap at the bottom of the parking brake shoes.

Now, getting the new one in, on the other hand, that's going to be tricky, but I've heard that with a little patience it can be done.

The broken ones are easy to get out. I did not have to disassemble anything on the axle. If my memory serves me correctly I was able to get the stud behind the axle shaft and then I could mess with it a little bit until I got it into the hole. I think I was able to get the end of the stud and then rotate the axle shaft a bit and feed it the rest of the way in. I then just used a couple of washers and a lug nut to pull the stud into place.
 






i change the tires last nite.. now i have 2 broken wheel stud.
 












i put 100lbs. the tire shop.. who knows....

IIRC, we did that in Chris's garage when we put your locker in. (or was it in Lindsy's truck? I definitely remember changing out a stud in his garage...can't forget working in 2" of slime....:eek: )

It definitely can be done without removing the rear axle. You just have to find the right "clock position" to put the stud in.
 






The stud doesn't attach to the rotor as mentioned before. You'll have to remove the rotor, and pound out the remaining broken stud (the easy part).

I suggest cutting the tip off the next stud (the unthreaded part). You'll have much more ease fanangling the stud through the tight space behind the mouting surface.

I just did this a few months ago after I broke a stud with ****ty lug nuts.


Remember to grease the washers, stud, and lugnut threads when you use them to pull the new stud into place.

and remember to clean off all the grease afterwards.

omg:eek: ,another trick is to grind a SMALL flat spot on the flange on the back of the stud so it clears the axle housing if you cant work the new one in
 






wow..thanks for all the tips. i will definitely put them all to good use. now, how do i buy the stud? do i need to show the old stud at the store? is there a part number? autozone has it? or dealership?

Just ask for a wheel stud for and explorer with your year at any store. If they need you to specify more ask for :

1/2" x 20 Wheel Stud

Napa sells them as sets of 5, and autozone sells them individually.
