i was leaving word today. pulled out and my explorer jerked like it popped out of gear so i go to put it back in gear and drive on down the road but i hit the gas and it makes a loud grinding noise. so i pull over and go to take off again it pulls up a little and quits pulling and starts making that loud grinding noise again. if anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated.

my explorer is 5 speed manual, 4 wheel drive, and 4.0

thank you

did you check your clutch, could be burnt out

Try moving in a straight line (dont turn) in 4HI (or it might be labelled "4WD"). If the vehicle moves in 4HI, then the rear differential/axle is dead. If it doesnt move in 4HI, then the problem is either in the transfer case or the transmission (I'm guessing the transfer case).

rear axle is fine sounds like the noise is from transmission\transfer case area. it will pull up a little when you go to take off then it just quits moving and make that horrible grinding noise
