Can you replace the motor while the Tcase is still on the truck supported on jackstands? If you can what is the best way to get to the motor? I've looked at the rebuild sticky but it was done with the case out of the truck. thanks

Yes, I removed mine to access one of the speed sensors. The motor is on the backside of the TC when it is in the truck. You might need to remove the skid plate; I'm not sure, because I haven't worked on it for several years.

Awesome, thanks. Any suggestions that stick out to you to make my life easier while doing it?

Probably the trickest part is that you must remove the wires that do not go to the motor from the connector before you will be able to remove the motor from the TC. There are wires going to both speed sensors and the brown wire that supplies the electromagnetic clutch inside the TC. There is a red plastic retainer that you remove from the connector that will allow you to remove individual pins.

Okay so I think it may be a little different on mine as in 98 the speed sensors were moved to I believe the rear diff or somewhere in the rear end. Do I remove the wires off of the transfercase motor or the wires mounted on the TC for the motor?

The VSS was moved to the rear for the 98, but the driveshaft speed sensors are still located on the TC housing.

There is a connector located right next to the shift motor that contains all the connections for the transfer case including the motor. You are going to need to either a) remove the wires that do not go to the motor from that connector or b) remove all the wires going to the motor from that connector.

Alright cool, so if my new motor comes with the harness I remove the wires going to the harness from case itself, if it doesn't I remove them going from the motor.

Thanks again. I'm not trying to be a bother just wanna be thorough before I jump in and do it.

Here are the service manual instructions for 99. Should be the same for 98 (its the same as my 97):
