have been watching the local craigslist/facebook marketplace but haven’t had any luck finding a floor shift bw4406 being parted out, but do occasionally find electronic shift ones. Has anyone tried using one of these with something like this conversion kit: Borg Warner Transfer Case, Electric To Manual Shift Conversion

Considering picking up something that has factory 4x4 instead of messing about with this, already have my share of projects but do like the Explorer I have and it has been remarkably reliable even though it has a few things it needs.

Also wondering if the conversion system place, ent looks like it would give the swap more or less room, looks like it mounts to a different spot then the floor shift based on the photos.

You can run the e shift 4406 yes However the shift motor is on the back of the t case and hits the fuel tank
So you need to use the fuel tank from a 2 door explorer sport, you will lose a few gallons of fuel as the sport uses a 14 gallon tank\
This will give you room for the electric shift t case motor
Then you can install the 4406e
Now you will need a way to shift the motor
You can use the stand alone 4x4 control box from a 02+ Ford like a Ranger, Expedition, etc this is referred to as the "motorolla box"
Next you will need the dash switch from a V6 explorer or Ranger with the bezel that fits your V8
You will also need the through the floor wiring harness that feeds the t case, goes through the cab floor under the drivers seat
once you have these parts there is some simple wiring to do to make the system work in your truck
You will also have to add one wire to the transmission, as the 5.0 V8 trucks are missing a single NSS wire for the 4x4 system

basically it has and can be done, we can help if you decide to go this route

To find a manual shift 4406 and the shifter linkage you should try calling some local wrecking yards or visit some local junk yards. I usually have good luck when trying to find one of these because they built ALOT of V6 and 4.6L F150 that use the manual t case

Thanks, this tells me a lot of what I needed to know. It is something I will consider, especially since swapping a vintage body on is on my list of possibilities in which case I would be elimininating the stock fuel tank anyway. With the converter I linked I think I would be spared all the wiring/switch fuses you listed out but it is good to know that’s an option.

yes that converter will work and its pretty awesome to see something like this finally for sale! The 4406 uses a VERY similar shift motor to the 1354 (v6 trans case) so this adapter will work
$300 goes a long ways towards a manual shift 4406 and the driveshafts and linkage that you need

Junk yards a pretty unreliable in my area but I will keep hunting. Might be getting a good deal on an xj which will be hard to pass up. Then I might just use the explorer for the 8.8 and wheels and tires, and shelve the 302 for now.

Also, you might try car-part.com and find a place that will ship one to you.

I was thinking at that point I’d be edging closer to atlas ii pricing...

If memory serves, my first one arrived to my door for 175 shipped. You might dig around n that site.

I do know the one I am driving on I found on there close enough to go get it for less than 100 + 50 core charge. You'll be way far less than 2500 even if you buy a new one I bet.

I see them on Ebay also
I have paid as little as $60 for a 4406 all the way up to $550, finding the linkage can be the hard part...the piece that bolts to the transmission that shifts the manual t case

Will better look into car-Part.com For some reason I thought I couldn’t use a 4.2 case.

a 4406 is a 4406
The 1356 became the 4406 and it was used behind the V6 and 4.6L triton from 96-2003 I believe
When the 302 and 351 went away so did the 1356..... in came the 4.2, 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8 triton gas engines. Trucks under 7200# used the 4406, behind the M5OD and 4r70w transmissions.
The 5.4 and up use the larger 4407 3/4 ton 1 ton t case behind the ZF6 and 4r100 transmissions
E shift versions of the 4406 were used in expeditions also making them plentiful

BorgWarner BW4406 & BW4407 Transfer Case Specs

Thanks for the additional info. Shame there was no version of a 4406 without the slip yoke like the 1356.
