C4/C5/C6 Swap?

I am not sure what carfreak is refering to, but the case fill valve body will fit into the C5 and then you can use a shift kit and C4 shifter, or so I have been told.

I wasn't referring to the valve body at all... I was referring to the case itself.... there are two version of the C4 tranny.....
The early version was a pan fill case, and as I stated in my post right above this, is a little bigger on the bellhousing end than the later model C4 case which is case fill.

you can use c4 parts, guts and innards in a c5 case if you wish, but if you've got a deal on a C4, then go for it.

no, it's a 1354 manual tcase but in my mind even that is stronger than my electronic 1354 tcase. I still don't quite understand the case fill deal. all it does is puts oil into the case rather than in a seperate pan? I don't see how that could make a huge difference, but if a case fill is better, then I suppose I should find out if it is case/pan fill. Thank you for the info. I'm sure I'll have more questions LOL

You found a C4 with a 1354 behind it? Wow. I never knew those existed without the C5 tailshaft and housing.

Anyone seen this before? it looks like some weird adapter between the trans and t-case.

isn't that what it's supposed to look like?

If you say so. My C5 certainly doesn't look like that. The tail housing is only about 5-6" long. I have not worked on a C4 in many years.

well, we have a C4 in our '69 mustang, and obviously it doesn't have a transfer case, but other than that it looks the same.

oh ok. I need to go to a salvage yard again. Thats why I linked teh pic and asked :D

I wouldnbt say the dana 20 is stronger, unless you rebuild it completely.

You cant use the Art Carr reverse C4 shifter without alsoo using the Art Carr reverse manual valve body....

picked up the transmission/t-case on Friday. I went down there, and he had an extra auto 1354 transfer case, so he gave it to me. a tranny & 2 transfer cases for $350. pretty good deal I'd say.

hopefully this goes in without any major issues, oh, and it is a pan fill, but I'll just have to deal with that.

alright, this thread has gone long enough without an update:

Brian_B- now I know why you were wondering about never seeing a 1354 behind a c4 before. the guy before me had put all advance adapter tailshafts and what not to connect it all together.

I have found out that the C5 flexplate is not required. I used the stock A4LD flexplate, the C5 flywheel, the C5 t.c, the C5 bellhousing, and my C4 is currently getting new clutch packs in it.

We cranked it tonight, and everything is turning without issue, so that's good news.

I'll try to keep this thread a little more updated than I have been.

Oh ok...now I know. That one had me baffled. Thanks for the update.

oh, and just fyi- a body lift helps sooooo much with the tranny swap. It is nice to have all that room to work with down there. :)

edit- with the way that the tranny/t-case is set up with everything, I measured it out, and NO DRIVESHAFT MODS NEEDED

With the c4 or c5, can you flip the trans kickdown lever and gear lever the opposite way so that the explorer cables will work almost the same way as the a4ld??? I will take the valve body off my c5 tomorrow and hopefully, I can do that....

I did on the kickdown. I thought you meant the shifter in the other thread.

I don't know. We didn't really care about the kickdown too much, because this thing is never going to go very fast.

Another update: We got the transfer case up to the tranny, and now it is all holding itself up. Great news: The stock crossmember works perfectly!!!
Now all we gotta do is put some linkage on, throw in some oil and test her out!

kickdown is important, whether going fast or not, you will want it installed and adjusted properly....

I never installed my kick down... but that's also b/c I'm plannin on the manual valve body. it helps it shift back to 1st gear when slowing down right? (kickdown cable) along with your regular downshifting while passing and whatnot of course.

the kickdown cable, as I understand it, is very important to transmission operation, it is the trans' only link to the real world....
