A couple of reports of PIUs causing Carbon Monoxide poisoning to officers. In one case, officer almost passed out and hospital determined it was from CO poisoning. Reports of other similar incidents forwarded to Ford.

Old news or something new? I just got wind of it this week.

Related to exhaust odor issue. I've only read of a couple of PIU incidents.

Got it off my department's feed as a heads up to fleet managers. We use both PIUs and Interceptor Sedans. I'll keep my eye out for updates. Nothing I've heard about re. this problem from my own dept.

It's posted on an earlier thread with links to the PIU story

As much as I love my Sport and drive a PIU all the time I'm thoroughly disappointed to see this issue carry on so long through this generation of Explorers.

Didn't this go back to the 2011/12/13 model years as well?

Mine is going in Monday for the 3rd time on this complaint. We'll see where it goes this time. Definitely an issue on my 14.

Has this been happening to any relatively new units or just those with lots of hours and/or miles? The recent news story above says it was the first report of this in a 2016, but a 2016 could be going on 2 years old now and have racked up quite a few hours/miles.

Cracked exhaust manifolds or other exhaust leaks would certainly seem like the most likely culprit.

Affects 2011+ Explorers.

Have seen this 93 page thread? http://www.explorerforum.com/forums...st-smell-in-cabin-during-acceleration.323597/

I haven't been aware of/following the problem, nor have I experienced it with mine. I have had some external smells when exiting the vehicle, but I only have about 1,200 miles and assumed some of the smells were just normal new car stuff like new part coatings and such burning off - same as other new cars I've had.

Is the cliff notes version that this affects all explorers, retail and PIU, with na and Ecoboost engines? Is it something that happens from new, or does it take some time/miles to show up?

I never had the 'smell' issue with my 2011 Limited or my current 2017 Platinum nor have a couple owners that I've spoken with in the area.

The only smells in my personal XLT are methane based but my department puts detectors in all the PIUs.

Any truth to the rumor that Ford will change the name to Police Utilities, dropping the "Interceptor" as sounding too aggressive and not politically correct in this anti cop climate? The new versions will be nicknamed "The P.U."

Took mine to the local ford. They said ford is "aware" of the issue and looking at a fix. They suggested i bring it in, pay the 1000$'s of bucks to get it fixed myself and IF ford makes a recall ill get my money back.. I said uh.. no lol thats the dumbest suggestion ever

What's ford's current fix? Yes i've seen the huge 95+ page thread and I have seen the Ford TSB'S

it seems its hit and miss if the tsb solves the issues or not, I just picked up a 2013 3.7 FWD PIU and noticed the smell coming into the cab and its strong.

EDIT

Sorry for the bump.
