I just changed out four GY Fortera tires for 2 GY Fortera and 2 Firestone. Afterwards most of the time upon using passing acceleration the trucks gear or brakes seemed jumpy. I can almost describe this like how the 4X4 feels like when it engages in low. I tried swapping the rear tires to the front and now the problem feels like its the opposite. Now acceleration is fine but when the truck slows down I feel the same jumpiness even a whirrring noise as if the truck were in slowing down in 4X4 low. I visually checked the ABS speed sensor on the front tires. Did not see one for the back. I'm guessing its located somewhere near the differential. What could the fix for this be?

Update: Pulled the ABS fuse, no joy, same problem plus had ABS light. Pulled 4X4 fuse (vbatt 2 & 1)#17 and #18, problem went away except of course for occasional flash of in-dash 4X4 high and low lights and ABS light. I haven't disconnected the differential ABS sensor if this at all is an ABS problem.

Will this workaround suffice until I can get two additional matching tires?

Do you have the auto 4x4 model? Sounds like you have installed tires of different tread wear and patterns when you did the 2 of one brand and 2 of the other swap out. With auto 4x4 you need tires to be of the same size, tread wear or the auto 4x4 will try and kick in. Thats what you are feeling. Get 4 tires of the exact size, tread wear and pattern and you should be okay.

I agree with Exproblems. If you have a four wheel drive you should always put 4 matching tires on it, meaning model number and how much wear they have.

I am curious as to why a vehicle owner would put four new tires on a car but 2 sets of 2 different tires. I have a Ford Edge with front wheel drive, and I recently replaced two tires different from the OEM. I haven't experienced any differences.

You need four tires within 1/4 circumference of each other. mismatched tires will cause transfercase or front driveline failures rather quickly. Im surprised the tire store even put 2 different tires on it. This has only been a problem on Explorers since 1997 LOL.

I was thinking he used 2 sets of 2, different used tires, not 2 sets of 2, new tires. If he did the new tire thing, than that makes no sense. The Ford Edge is front wheel drive, not auto 4x4 like the Explorers. That is why you wouldn't notice the same thing as the Explorers with different tire size or wear.

What you really mean to say is, Ford is really happy with this design, 14 yrs and counting. Thats why on their TV commercials they claim to buy 3 million tires per year to sell to their customers with uneven tire wear. :p:

Like swetrid explained, the Outside Diameter of the 4 tires must be very close, even tires with identical profiles and widths from different manufacturers can be different enough to cause this to happen.

I see what you mean about the new vs. used tires, and I was hoping to get more info. from him as to why. Some would argue that even non - 4 * 4 owners should be careful when "mixing and matching tires", but you are right about the 4 * 4 thing being especially picky.

Update:

Yes they were two sets of used tires. I had previously used one tire that was a different brand since I had a flat and it was the only tire I had. I didnt have any problems until the recent tire change. I thought that it was an ABS issue, but now that I've removed the 4X4 fuses 17 & 18, the problem has gone away. I was worried about messing up the transfer case if I left it the way it was. Do you all think this will work until I get two more matching tires?

I really don't know if having the fuses for the 4 wheel drive pulled will harm anything in the overall drivetrain. Have you gotten any error codes since pulling the fuses? Since the problem with the auto 4x4 trying to engage with the different tires on the vehicle went away, it might work. Hopefully someone with more knowledge of this system will jump in here, maybe "Swetrid"?

I don't know a whole lot about 4 * 4 engaging, but you should be fine for a short term until all your tires match.

Isn't this a situation that calls for the brown wire mod?
