hello all new to the site. I hope I am asking my question in the right place. If not could someone direct me to the right place.

First fast back story. I have a 1999 Explorer Sport. When I went out to the truck I found that som one had broken the passenger side widow. I went to the salavage yard and picked up a replacement window. When I told my wife what happened she told me her purse was in the car. The damaged window was bad enough but now I realize her set on keys were in her purse. So now the scum who broke into the car has the keys and knows where the truck is parked each night.

The local locksmith want nearly $500 to rekey the truck. I found a set of replacement locks with two new PATS keys for about $150.00. I am also going to order two new remotes and reprogram to open the truck. I do not have full coverage on the truck so insurance will not pay.

My question is how hard is it to change out the two locks in the door, the hatch lock, and Ignition lock cylinder? I have read the info on reprogamming the PATS. When I install the new ignition cylinder will I be able to self reprogram with the new keys at myself or will it need to be done by a locksmith?

Also can I replace the ignition with a NON PATS switch? I am not sure if I should just bite the bullet and pay the locksmith or try this myself.

Thanks any info would be great.

You are better off going the locksmith route, as the PCM and PATS module are a set with the ignition lock sensor and key. Switching any of these will reslut in a need for a reprogram anyway.
Your other option would be a handheld programmer--scanner device like an xcal2 with pre loaded tune files which turn the PATS system off.

JUst my .02. Thread moved from 91-94 sub forum to 95-01 sub forum.

Pay the locksmith. The extra money spent is well worth the time/aggravation you will save in the end.

thank you for the replys and moving to correct loction.
I am thinking of trying to just remove the door and hatch locks and having them rekeyed. I will end up being on an version on the old two key system till funds are there to have the swith rekeyed. anyone ever pull the locks out of the door and rear hatch/ gate?

fyi I bought two remotes on ebay. I was unable to program. I guess some times a price to good to be true is just that.

Try getting some new batteries. If they've been sitting on a shelf for a while the coin cells might be toast.

yeah checked the batteries and they are ok.
here is a starnge thing.
when I try to go into program mode after 3 cycles of the key I hear a "beep" sound and locks cycle. beeps on 3, 6 ,9................... but would not let me program remote. I tried on 8, 3, 6 and 9 cycles.

also here is another weired one.....
I had two keys when I bought the truck 10 years ago. one was lost so I had to do the dealer thing and get two new keys programed. about a year ago the "missing key" turned up. I was able to cycle the key the three times and it reprogramed and started the truck. when it reprogramed the other two key did not work. I tried one of the new keys. took three cycles and than it worked. Locksmith said "yeah that can happen on a very few 99 Xs but most will not reprogram that way".

My door locks on both doors are 'sticky' and it drives me crazy- takes a few seconds to get it to turn - almost like the key does not fit. Aggrevating enough to replace at least the drivers door.

Have you tried lubing the lock cylinders? I put a squirt of WD40 into each cylinder about once a year as part of my PM.
