Okay, The expert has been stumped...

I've got a 93 4.0L and Auto tranny. When the tranny is put into gear, the CEL goes on, truck runs rough. Put it in park or neutral, the CEL goes off, truck smooths out. The only error code I can pull is 566 which is 3-4 shift solonoid. (Unrelated because the kickdown cable is not hooked up) Please no dumb remarks about the O2 sensors being bad. They've been replaced.

Thanks for the help!

MAF sensor is jacked

How badly does the idle drop off when you put it in gear??? When you are driving it, is it still rough, or does it smooth out when you start moving? If the idle drops a lot, but it smooths out when you start moving, you could be having a torque converter problem.

The idle drops from 900rpm in neutral to about 550 in gear. Almost to the point to where it will die. The truck will run great through the gears. No problem with power. Just idle. And the CEL stays on the whole time in gear. The Torque converter is new.

have you checked the TPS..that will cause the tranny to act, in the words of my tranny guy, like it has a 'brain fart'.
And, I think a CEL. The code you are pulling should cause the OD OFF light to flash, at least on the 4R44E and 5R55E, not sure about the A4LD.

OK BRETT IS TALKING ABOUT MY TRUCK.

VACUUM PROBLEMS HAVE ALSO BEEN NOTICED. BRAKE PEDAL GETS SOFT WHEN IDLE DROPS.

CHECKING THAT OUT THIS AFTERNOON.

I DID GET A TPS CODE, VOLTAGE OUT OF RANGE. TPS IS ABOUT A YEAR OLD.

HERE'S THE REST OF THE STORY:
93 OHV 4.0L, 80k MILES
GRANTELLI 70MM MAS
BBK 66MM TB
K&N CONE
JBA HEADERS AND FULL 2.5" EXHAUST
93 A4LD JUST BUILT AND INSTALLED
CUSTOM REBUILD.
93 EEC-IV WITH JET CHIP

NEAUTRAL SENSOR WORKING
REVERSE LIGHTS WORKING
02 SENSOR WIRING CHECKED, 02'S REPLACED
EEC TO A4LD WIRES CHECKED, PIN 51 AND 53 (SHIFT SOLENOIDS)

TRUCK RAN PERFECT FOR 1 WEEK AFTER TRANNY WAS INSTALLED.
EXHAUST SHOP RE-LOCATED 02 SENSOR IN Y PIPE TO CLEAR NEW FLOOR SHIFTER LINKAGE
(TRUCK WAS A 5 SPEED, NOW AN AUTO)
USING FLOOR SHIFTER FROM 85 BII 2WD
PICKED IT UP FROM EXHAUST SHO AND HAVE HAD THIS PROBLEM EVER SINCE.

NOW DONT SAY TAKE IT BACK AND HAVE THEM FIX IT, BECAUSE THIS IS A CUSTOM TRUCK AND NOBODY WILL TOUCH IT (88 BII, 93 OHV, TOTALLY CUSTOM EVERYTHING) SO I HAVE TO KNOW WHAT IS WRONG BEFORE I CAN GET THEM TO PAY FOR REPAIRS IF IT IS INDEED MAJOR.

CODES I AM GETTING
566 SHIFT SOLENOID 3-4 MALFUNCTION- KOEO
41 02 SENSORS FAILED DURING- KOER
TPS OUT OF RANGE
RPM TO LOW TO PERFORM HEGO TEST

AND S FEW VARIOUS OTHER BS CODES

THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE! GOING TO TEST VACUUM CONNECTIONS THIS AFTERNOON, WE ARE THINKING THE TRANNY SHOP MAY HAVE TORCHED THE LINE....

Firstly, I'd stop typing long posts in all caps. Makes it hard to read and for us to help. But anyway,

I'd take out that JET chip. I've heard nothing but problems with them, and it could definately be a culprit. Also, by relocating the O2 sensor, it could be operating out of range and therefore not properly. Even though only a year old, your TPS is bad, or some of the wires to it, or due to the chip it's reading poorly.

Take out the chip and let us know if that helps. I have some more possible suggestions.

Alec, sorry for the caps, I run AutoCAD all day and I'm used to having it locked on.

I have tried running the system with a plain jane spare EEC-IV (my old computer) and the same codes and situation is present.

I will test the TPS after I check the vacuum....

Thanks for your help...
