cigarette lighter

i got a 1996 limited and i want to put a cigarret lighter in the back seat-back hatch so my plan was to wire it in with one of my cigarret lighters up front. but i already have my cb wired into it..would it be ok to have this cigarret lighter wired into the same spot as the cb and the original one? but not have them all working somethign at the same time? if not where would be a good play to wire this one into?

doing so would probably cause the fuse the blow a lot quicker.

i would just get some 16 gauge speaker wire and a small fuse holder and run a new line to where you want it

well i got a cigareet lighter kit and it has a fuse built into the line..so i just need to know would that be a good power sourc.e.if not where else could i use.

check the fuse box??

Also for your kit...a good power source would be the fuse box under the hood or wire it directly to the battery with the fuse within 18 inches of the battery

so you say insted of tieing it into the orignianlon i should just run it straight from the battery and then for the ground jsut use somewhere on the chas or should i run it to the negative to the batt

I'd Do that but minus Speaker wire and use atucal Electrical wire. It'll work, but that's not what speaker wire was for. Automotive wire is usually cheaper and made for your kind of application. And, IMO, it looks really tacky to use Speaker wire. Not trying to be mean, but I don't get why you would do this. Good luck.

yea im not using speaker wire for this..never would..but should i wirew it to the battery or to the stock cigarret lighter?

wire is wire...16 gauge speaker wire will be just as good as 16 gauge electrical wire in this situation. The only difference is the jacket.

I just recommended 16 gauge speaker wire because I usually have a bunch leftover from installs and amp kits...most people have random bits of it also

I would go for the battery, It's not that much further to go and it'll be one less thing to trip the 30 amp fuse on the Factory Cig lighter circuit.

aznboi3644, It is just wire, but like you stated, the jacket is what is different and i don' t think speaker wire is as Sturdy as the Automotive. A good example would be that Stock radio speaker wire is not the Normal Speaker wire that people use for installs. It's Automotive wire. As long as it's not inside the dash and not rubbing up agianst a bunch of stuff I think it would be fine. But it's in a Truck and Rubbing/Heat/pinching is bound to happen. It's ultimately your truck, and you can do what ever.

hmm i guesse i will go to the battery..but the only problem is gettign it through the fire wall...is there aplace on the fire wall that haas a hole for me to go through or do i have to drill a new one that anyone knoes of?

Well, In my truck I went through the Gromet on the drivers side firewall. Around the pedals. Just Use a Screwdriver and pry up the rubber and put the wire through the whole. It will pinch alittle, but it works. If you do this, Make sure to put a Fuse bewteen the battery and the firewall so that you don't end up with a fire in the Engine Compartment. Good luck.

FYI, the cigarette lighter next to the radio is separate from the console power adapter. That dash circuit has about a 10 amp fuse in it, the console wire is on a 20-25 amp fuse.

If the CB is attached on the tan/violet(console) wire, it will only pull a few amps. I'd add the extra power outlet to that console power circuit. That wire ends at the ashtray power outlet on Explorers without the full console. That is a large gauge wire, about 12ga. Good luck,

yea the cb is wired to the one on the passanger side floor. and where were yous aying to wire it into CDW6212R

Remove the console and tap into that large wire, I recommend not cutting the wire. For a high amp(potentially) circuit like that, I strip the wire off for about 1.5 inches, and merge the new wire into the existing wire. Solder the wires together, separate the original wire through its middle, making an opening. Run the new wire through that and barely twist it around the existing wire. Hold that together and solder it carefully. I should have taken pictures of some of my wiring tasks, it's harder to describe that.

This is just an example of the wiring I have gotten into. Solder all high powered circuits, just crimp for low powered stuff.

hmm yea it is kinda hard to understand but i think i got it. then jsut run the negatie of the lighter to the body somewere? and if i take it apart and cant figure it out ill jsut run it to the battery i guesse..or would it be that bad to run it and join with the cb?

Well the CB you say is in the console outlet. That tan/violet wire will be obvious when you get to the backside of the console. Attach your new ground wire for that outlet to the other large ground wire in the console, or a bolt on the floor, depending on where you locate the new power outlet.

hmm ok well i looked for this wire and i coudn't see it. so i guesse it's either go to the battery or i will just wire it in with the orginal and the cb. and jsut be careful.

Okay, I looked at my spare console I have, the wire for that power outlet is a brown/violet wire, you might call that pink or light purple too. I thought it was a tan bas color, but it looks brown in the console.
