HI, My explo started to clunk at the end of braking and at the take off from stand still position. Moreover when shifted to 4+4 high I hear the front axle and it makes the terrible noise (clunk, tapping) while turning (on the dry surface). Help before I go to ford and spend tremendous money.

The slip-yoke on the driveshaft causes that. Remove the rear u-joint and slide the slip joint apart. Lubricate the slip-joint and slip it back together. That usually fixes it for a while.

Do not engage the 4wd and make a tight turn on a high-traction surface. That causes driveline bind-up which puts tremendous stresses on the drivetrain components. They can and do make funny noises when subjected to those high loads.

Another thing to check is your brake caliper bolts. They can get loose, allowing your caliper to clunk when you start or stop.
Good call^^^
He is referring to the bolts on inside of spindle, which hold the caliper brackets on.

I would also check your front suspension - Ball joints, tie rod ends, and end links. I assume it also happens when you hit bumps?

Good suggestions so far.......and the two problems may or may not be related. That being said.....

You may wanna read this......look at a possibility of all the suggestions:

Who knows, what will fix it......clunks and trying to fix a problem via the internet......need I say more?

Aloha, Mark

It could be a front bearing hub assemblie as well.

maybe your control bushing, mine are shot and i get alot of clunk...but i would check you front jackshaft coming from the t-case to the front axel

Hello everyone!

I have a similar problem, but mine's more like a groan when it takes off, and when I brake. It's faint, at least from inside the cabin.

My brakes are also squeaking, but that happens only during light braking. I'll have the calipers checked up, too.

Thanks.

Hi, thanks for answers. I have checked all the bolts. they are thight. I have ordered hub assembly (NAPA - if anyone could tell me are they good or not). Next weekend I am going to change it. If it helps I will write about it.One of my friends suggested that it could be driveaxlesvbut it seem to be impossible.

hi

I have changed hub assembly and lubricated slip yoke. there is still clunk somewhere in the front when starting or coming to stop. Halfshafts ? Something to do with torsion bars ? no idea. What is funny it starts to be noisy after some 10 minutes drive.

Yeah, it happens when I hit the bumps. I have changed all baljoints, so maybe it is sway bar links ???

I probably would have started with the end links since they are hard to isolate, go bad frequently, are easy to replace and cost so little.

Slip joint is good, ujoints are good (on both driveshafts), ball joints are good, sway bar end links are nice and tight (not stock, poly) clunking at the end of the stop, not on bumps either.. can't figure it out.. oh yeah, and all brake hardware is nice and tight... and it's not related to the transmission or anything like that... any guesses? It Feels and sounds like a sway bar end link clunk, but everything is as tight as can be, and doesn't happen if I move weight to each side. (swerving)

bump?
