yea, but there was nobody but me in the truck this time! :-) (and I didn't panic - one of those "been there, done this" situations.)

Tom, at least your consistent. That's the same side, correct?

drivers side, twice.
passenger side, once.

passenger side was in Moab.

so, no, not the same side. :-)

Tom - thanks for the advise... I'll keep it in mind. Hopefully I"ll just make it down without event, this is the one time I've been advised that if I start to roll, my chances are better trying to bail out of the vehicle then they are to stay with the vehicle, at least I have a slight chance of living if I bail at the right time and away from the vehicle, etc. but they say if you go over in your vehicle, your pretty much dead... its a few thousand feet before theres anything to stop you from rolling.

So, all you have to do is roll it over one more time on your passenger side and then you'll have it all balanced out, right? :D

let's not even go there gerald..

I'm trying to mend my rolling ways.

I still haven't seen any dissenting votes. Let's make our plans now. In the absence of hearing any "nay" votes for the past several days this has been posted, I assume we have "yea" votes.

Rick, please post on the events calendar a Colorado Colors Run for Labor Day weekend, Saturday through Monday. I feel confident that there will be no difference from Moab this year and there will be early arrivals to trail on Friday too but the "official" run should be the holiday weekend.

You can post me as the Run contact at gjarrett@juno.com. I would like to stay in close touch with any of the Colorado Bunch that can be of help and planning. I also want to do a prerun with any of you before the main event. I get the feeling from reading the books that my rig can negotiate most of the trails as long as I can keep from "getting the poo scared out of me". ;)

We will run the Ouray/Silverton/Telluride area. Montrose is in the area but a little north and I would like to hear how far away it is. I cannot remember. Looks to be easy driving difference if you want to go for cheap rooms. I would like to hear ideas on where to stay closer in the Ouray area and also campgrounds. Hotels/motels, prices, etc. I've stayed at the Montrose KOA before and am sure there are others.

Time for plans, reservations, preruns! I'm pumped!

Gerald, the calendar is updated. Dead Link Removed

Im in

ok, looks like i will have plenty of days off to join you guys. I would really enjoy doing some camping, anyone else up for it?
Gerald, it would be great if we could meet up and head out there together, let me know. :)

I just ordered the books and will also check with some friends who have run those trails in their jeep.

I'll see what they know about motels, KOA's in the Montrose, Ouray area.

Now all this means I need to get the bigger tires and other work done to our truck.

I live in Montrose, CO and work in the Ouray/ Telluride area. I can help out with info on local lodging/camping and I'm hoping to scout out some trails.
I would not recommend Telluride for lodging, etc., very pricey... Ouray would be the "gateway" to the mountain trails from the north.
I suggest Montrose would be the best "starting point" for all based on the following:

1. Montrose is only 35 miles from Ouray.

2. Ouray has no major motels and during Labor Day weekend, securing a room could be tough. There are dozens of motels, restaurants in Montrose.

3. Big weather difference between Montrose and Ouray. The term, "If you don't like the weather in Colorado, wait a few minutes" definately applies in these mountains. A prime consideration for those wanting to camp out.

4. Anyone needing repairs/parts will be SOL in Ouray. Montrose has all major parts houses, repair shops, and a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Not to exclude Ouray, it's a quaint little "tourist trap" nestled in the mountains. But to get everyone settled in at a central location, Montrose would be the best bet.

Gerald, if you need any specific info about the area, let me know and I'll try to help out.

You bet. We need to start getting info on camping sites and hotel names and rates. I'd appreciate all the help you can give. I've stayed at the Montrose KOA before as a kid and I spent a couple of weeks in your town on a church mission trip. We stayed in a Baptist church in your town.

35 miles is no big deal to me, but on the trips I took in Moab to the Top of the World trail 30 miles away was a lot more of a hassle to drive that far back when the other trails were right there. It's a judgement call. Ouray may be 35 miles away, but Silverton and Telluride will be even farther away.

I feel certain you can confirm that Montrose will have more choice in cheaper motels than Ouray which may be a little pricey. I still am leaning toward camping out, in which case I'd like to stay closer to Ouray if there is a nice campground or KOA there. If I could split a cheaper room in Montrose with someone it would probably be worth the drive for me.

I guess if you could do a little research for us and provide some comparative info we'll all start deciding about where to stay.

Thanks for all your help!

head count...

Gerald,
I know this is still in the works, but could you give me an idea as to about how many people we are expecting for this exploration? I wanna get ahold of a couple people in Ouray and see if there is anything big happening over Labor Day.
Even though we are far away from any big city, Ouray is a tourist destination. Also, there is one Super8 motel in Ridgeway, which is 10 miles north of Ouray.
And, there is a natural hot springs pool right in town so everyone bring their suits. BTW, there is a second natural hot springs pool a little out of town that is a little more "natural" than the one in town...(clothing optional)... In which case, forget the suits but bring your dark sunglasses ;)

Good idea

Let's get some feedback here guys.. Wabbit needs info. That Super8 sounds like a good compromise; maybe not too expensive and it's three times closer to Ouray.

We need replies answering three questions:
1) Are you coming? How many passengers with you?
2) Do you plan on moteling it or camping?
3) If moteling, are you interested in splitting a room and lowering expense?

I might be coming, may have one passenger with me. However Gerald, I think we'll have to limit the amount of time you can spend talking on the CB this time :).
Not sure if i'll be moteling or camping, depends on how much money I have at the time (i.e. how many repairs I have to do to my Explorer between now and then)
If I am moteling, I'll probably already be splitting a room so that won't really be an option.

Gerald,
At least Rick will be coming. I won't know until school starts. I have to wait until school starts and see how my class is because I'll have to take an extra day or two off. Since we are starting school Aug. 23 I may have them settled down enough. Rick, I know, will be hoteling it either with me or alone. He's become a wimp!;) Hope to see everyone there.

CO Fall Colors

Wabbit,

We plan to be there! (2), and Debby says we're motelling it!

Hey All,

I plan on being there! At this point, Saturday and Sunday look like good days for me to wheel. On Monday, I'm going to continue west to California.

1) Are you coming? Yes How many passengers with you? At this point, just me
2) Do you plan on moteling it or camping? Leaning toward motel, but will probably have camping gear with me.
3) If moteling, are you interested in splitting a room and lowering expense? Yes

As the plans begin, the excitement builds .....

Roll Call.

The Robertson Clan will be there! We'll drive "Smiley" up sometime Friday. There will be 4 of us and the plan is to Motel it, but we will have camp gear in hand. Look forward to being on the trails with all of you again.

Tom Davis, I can't help but noticed that you only rolled on the passenger side when " Grumpy the Ford guy " was with you. Matt also had a near roll when " Grumpy " was with him. I think it was somehow Grumpy's fault.

Happy Trails and hopefully some color.
