I'd like to go...not sure if I can yet.
I'm talking my wife into letting me go.
I will stay in a hotel with a private room.
This should be a very very busy weekend.
Still labor day right? Don't wait too long
for Hotel or camping arrangements.
Rooms and camp sites will go fast.

Sure you don't want to push it back a week?
Sorry if you've been threw all this already.

Joe from Colorado

...unless it works out like Memorial Day did where everyone told us "don't go four-wheeling, EVERYONE will be four-wheeling this weekend" and we went, and there was only like one other person on teh trail, that was doing an easy trail (Saxon Mountain) but your right, hotel reservations should be made as soon as possible.

Okay, here is the deal with me. Friday and Saturday I have a responsibility to be in the mountains here in New Mexico. I figure I could leave from there Saturday evening and either camp or motel it in Colorado Saturday night. I could be on the trail Sunday and Monday and leave Monday afternoon. If I come there will be 2 of us and we will camp or motel it. We are doing the same trails in the area next month so my final decision will come depending on our experiences with camping/moteling.

David, I just checked out your photos from MM 'OO did you run that trail in your Explorer??

Rick

I'm in for the Labor Day weekend. It will be busy, so hotel reservations will need to be made soon.

(see if this cut'npaste works)

I just ordered the two guide books from Amazon (via Explorer4x4) and couple of CDs. :D

2 questions:

Where (which town) are we going to base this run out of? Ouray, Montrose or ??

Do we have a list of who wants to share a room?

I'd like to go ahead and make reservations now - you never know how many people will show up on a holiday weekend.

I'm not sure that there has been a decision yet about which town we'll be doing... possibly both... a few pre-runs will give a good indicator of the trails that the group will be doing and maybe on Sunday I'll take a few (those with balls of steel) out to Red Cone, I've decided thats one of my new favorite trails even though I haven't made it all the way to the most dangerous part yet... it's a fair drive away but the whole trail can be done in a few hours. Guess we'll see what everyone wants to do. I have received ALMOST official confirmation (ha ha) that I will have a passenger/hotel room mate with me.

Geez, now we gotta start thinking already about where to stay. I'm thinking of camping out. If I do that I might as well do it right in the center of the area at the Ouray KOA. If I did that, would anyone else be interested? If no one else wants to camp out I'll split a room with someone wherever the primary hotel ends up being. I'm in it for ACAP (as cheap as possible) though.

Is there anyone planning any pre-running June 24-25? Char and I are planning a summer get away. The hitch is we are taking the VW as the Explorer is in the shop.

If anyone want's to pick up a couple passengers for the weekend let me know. No matter what we are going to be doing some on-road Exploring in Southwest Colorado from June 22-26.

Wabbit, maybe we could meet you and your wife for dinner one night.

Most of the better know trails are located in the Ouray area. Remember that south of Ouray the grades are steep, speed limits are low, and traffic is heavy. Thirty miles of travel may take an hour each way. I vote for staying in Ouray.

It has been a few years for me, but I have run Cinnimon Pass, Engineer Pass, Imogene Pass, and Ophir Pass. These trails are rich with scenery and mine ruins. Perfect for the unmodifieds.

By the way count me in. I will bee there

Check out Black Bear Pass, from Red Mountian to Telluride.

count us in!

We will be there(my fiance and I), looks like we will be moteling it, but if enough people would like to camp we will cancel the reservations. Gerald, what do you think, wanna take the drive together?
Let me know.
Rod G.
Austin Texas

Rick - unfortanetly my dad graduates on June 24th so I won't be able to attend, wish I could - we're gonna have a houseful of relatives that weekend. The weekend after I'd be available except I think Im gonna try to conquer Red Cone again (and I won't be happy until I do) :).

Matt, what's Red Cone and what happened last time??

Did we lock down a formal date for the runs?
Friday Sat, Sun, Monday?...did we decide on
Montrose or Ouray..? Perhapse you found this
link already...but here it is if you have not.
I'm researching rooms thanks...

I described it a little bit before I believe, its one of the most dangerous trails in Colroado, a regular moderate-difficult trail untilt he last 3/4 mile which is practically straight down, and if you get sideways you'll roll and theres not much to stop you for a few thousand feet. Unfortanetly for a few weeks you can only go up it if your a member of the mile hi jeep club, or with someone who is, it's locked off because its not opent he whole way and its one way down obviously. The last time we attempted it (2 weeks ago) it was still blocked by snow but with the heat I think that may not be as much of a problem...)

I realize some of you are coming from a long way for the "Rocky Mountain High" experience. With this in mind, I would suggest Ouray as it is nestled in the mountains.
I have never been on a run of this nature but I would imagine that everyone staying in one town would make things easier. To each his own of course but for the best "taste" of the high country after the trail, Ouray would be best.

Gerald, the Ouray KOA is 2-3 miles out of town but it is a very nice area.

Rick, Christine and I would very much like to meet you and Char when you come this way.

Camping in Ouray

Gerald,

If you're camping, I'll camp too. I assume the KOA has HOT showers, right?

How long does it take to get to Colorado from Dallas? I'm planning on passing through Dallas sometime on Thursday - maybe a bunch of us can meet up and caravan.

Rick, Red Cone is on pg 194 of Book 1. If Matt does that hill, he gets to be "Brain of Chipmunk" for the next year :D.

I looked more closely at the book last night and except for one easy trail, Ouray is north of all of them, so Ridgway and Montrose are actually just that much farther away. I do think we need to concentrate in Ouray.

"Formal" scheduling for trail runs should be for trails Saturday and Sunday to give us long travelers Friday and Monday to get there and leave. However, I think Friday and Monday should also be pre and post runs like we did in Moab because many will want to stretch out the trip. That'll also give us time to attend Matt's funeral after he tries Red Cone :D. I will also try to take an extra day off; Friday would probably be best for me and I'd rather do pre-run than post-run.

I think a Texas caravan would be great idea. Like I said I will probably leave a day early, will that work for others? If not then others can always meet in Dallas after I leave. Rob, Rod, Scott? If I want to run Friday I'll probably take Thursday and Friday both off so I'd be leaving Wednesday evening after work or VERY early Thursday morning.

Dallas Caravan

Not sure when I will leave the Dallas area, Probably Friday at 1:00 P.M. or I may take Friday off? Not sure yet.

I took me 13 Hours to get to Crested Butte from Dallas. That was Good Weather in the Winter. I went through OKC and picked up another couple. However thta would be a good est Time for a Caravan. In a caravan I always get concerned about speed that everyone is comfortable with driving. For me it's about 10 over the speed limit. For Gerrald its around 65 mph where his computer says he gets the best Gas Milage. I can Caravan at slower speeds or higher if needed.

Anyone that is going to Caravan or thinks they want to from DFW area, e-mail me privatly and we can start working on the details and then post them in case others want to go.

Happy Trails
