I have a 97 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0L AWD. I am currently wanting to completely redo everything from the engine to rear end and everything in between. I am looking for advice and lists for parts on an appropriate build. Im looking to keep the 5.0L engine block but redo everything on it. Basically what Im looking for is a bunch more torque for hauling and offroading but enough horsepower to offset the balance of the torque so I dont end up twisting the tranny. Also wanting to know what transmission would fit with 5.0L but would be more relaible then the one I have now. I am also wanting to if at all possible move it from AWD to 4WD. Any and all info would be good have plenty of time to accomplish this build.

look for an explorrer express supercharger kit for your 5.0 motor.
That will take care of your torque issues.

Im not sure on converting from AWD to 4wd. 4406 transfer case seems to be the preference. its a monster. The trans? Ive never read on anyone saying the trans you have is weak.

I cant speak from 1st hand experience, but thats a start.

Alright if you have a step by step that would be great. I am also wanting to redo the internals as well. I currently have everything in my garage and the body of my truck is at a body shop right now getting sanded all dents popped and realigned. Then repainted midnight black.

Very nice on the body.
If you search 4406, and look around the forums you will get ideas. No real how to on the motor, but there are head differences. Also, the basics to consider like compression, cam, that stuff.

Your on your own to do some reading on guys that have done this stuff. I haven't, so I have no details. Most of the info is here though.
