2002 Explorer Sport
I have seen 2 different HP/TQ ratings for the 2002 Explorer SPORT.

203/237 manual trans
and
208/245 Automatic trans

Other places state it as 203/237 for either.

Which is correct...I JUST NEED TO KNOW !!!!

It depends on the year.

'97 & '98 = 205 HP, 250 ft.lbs
'99 - '01 = 210 HP, 240 ft.lbs
'02 = anyone's guess, When Ford started putting the SOHC in the Rangers it was rated at 207 HP. The SOHC in the 2002 is rated at something different. I'm not surprised to hear that there is conflicting information regarding the 2002 Sport as well. Back in the very early years of the Explorer the engine had two different ratings depending on whether or not it had a manual or automatic. Ford was probably concerned about putting in too much torque/HP into the manual transmission that they detuned the engine via a PCM programming change in the manual Explorers. After a few years the engine will probably carry the same rating again.

So what are the differences in the '97-98's and the '99-01's to make the numbers different?

I'd rather have the extra torque over the ponies anyways, but I'm still curious.

I'm not certain, but I think it has to do with the PCM programming, probably due to emissions. I've heard that the '99 and up SOHC's don't run like the '97 & '98s but I've never driven one to compare. I've heard that Ford changed the transmission to shift at a much lower RPM under WOT than my '97 shifts at (6000 RPM). The exhaust is still the same and as far as I know the engine is the same. It might have just been marketing strategy by Ford since HP sells. This way they can say that they increased the HP to 210 hopeing no one will notice the 10 ft/lb reduction in torque.

Well, I don't think they messed with the shift points, 'cause my '01 will run up to 6k at wot too. My guess is either marketing is messing with the #'s or they made some minor change in the pcm for economy that skewed the #'s some
