Console Retrofit Questions....

Hey guys,
The next project I have lined up is a newer center console retrofit (95+ console) into my 94 XLT. I want a more functional console that actually connects to the front dash. How hard is this, and is it possible without MAJOR modification? I plan on putting my existing console in the back seat area when I swap out my rear bench for buckets (I know that requires modification). Also, is it absolutely nessacary to cut the headliner to put in an overhead console? I have a sunroof so I would get the short style one. The liner seems rigid enough to support it, am I wrong? Please let me know. I didn't plan on modding the Explorer when I bought it, but ever since my dad gave me a set of Mickey Thompson wheels and tires, I just couldn't help myself. It's an addiction like my BMW! Thanks!

hey that sounds pretty cool, reminds me when i was in fort worth at a swap meet. i saw this old firebird and the interior was all redone with the newer styles interior. so it was like a 69 or something with a 2001 interior. looked good besides the fact it was a pontiac. there are little cross braces under the headliner. you might want to use those to mount it. that what we use when we do overhead monitors. the only cutting i could see necessary is if there are lighte on the console and you want to have them functional. good luck

You need to cut the headliner to mount the console. You've got screw holes under the headliner and you want a flush fit.

Ok...sounds good about the overhead...now what about the center console? What modification, if any, would I need to make? Thanks!

The newer console doesn't fit up to the older dash very well, but it could be made to work with some custom fiberglass. I had started on this project in my 94 Ranger, and never got around to finishing it before I sold the truck. The console will fit physically, its just mainly cosmetics. You do need to notch a small corner in the front passenger side to clear part of the lower dash, but once in place it can't really be seen.

Also, I take offense to that comment about the Pontiac!!!
