I have a 97 Sport and it has the control trax awd. My grandmother has a 01 sporttrac. It gives her the choice of 2wd-4wdhigh-4wdlow. Mine has choice of auto-4high-4low...what could I do to switch mine to a non-awd. Is there just something that I have to swap from a non-awd xplorer.? Or would I just have to unplug some sensors to stop the awd from kicking on...b/c it seems that I could easily get a burnout going if the awd didn't try to kick on. I'm just wondering if its possible and if it is it'll be a future project.

You would need a different transfer case. Your tcase is permanantly locked into 4x4, short of disconnecting your front driveshaft it is not possible.

It's NOT awd, it's automatic 4wd. With awd both axles are constantly getting power. With the automatic 4wd the rear axle is getting all the power until the computer detects wheel spin, then it engages sending power to the front to prevent that wheel spin. Only the v8's have a true awd system. Now if you want to get rid of it do a search for brown wire mod, it will tell you everything you would ever want to know about disengaging it.

REally..? That sucks... well I might have to take out the front drive shaft some time during the summer to roast some tires...thanx for the info.

he has a v6, it's not awd it's 4wd. The brown wire mod will make act like 2wd.

So I don't need to get a diff. transfer case...sweet..ok..i'll take a look at the brown wire mod..

ok....yes its a V6 but it has the control trac 4wd...so how do I get it to not jump into 4wd when it feels slip

NOw with this mod...when I switch it into 4wdhigh &low will it go in...? and then when I switch it to auto it'll be 2wd.?

yes, it has 4wd as I stated in the above posts, which is different from the awd system that came with the v8's. The brown wire mod will keep it from going into 4wd automatically.

basically yes, you'll have a switch, turn the switch off, and your 2wd, turn it on, and it'll be just like it is now. And again, if you do a search on the forum for brown wire mod and read some of the threads they will answer all of your questions.

Oic, thought it was the AWD V8 cuz he said it was AWD. Being the 4 auto the brown wire mod should indeed work! Don't know how much tire roasting he will achieve with the v6 though.

OK...Thank you soo much..all the info. hit me in the face so fast I didn't understand...but thank you and I will search the brown wire mod....thanx again

Yeah, but he also said it was a sport, and the sports never got a v8 from the factory, and he also called it control trac, which was what they called the 4wd system then. It's also extremely common for people not in the know to call it awd.

WEll the times I have got the tires spinning it did it with ease...and when I lined up next to my buddies 01 V6 mustang it put him to shame... yea sry about the confusion with the awd...I could of swore that it said control trac awd...but i was wrong..it was 4wd

Yea...I had two other friends in my sport and he had one passenger and I still out ran him...I can't stop just giving him crap about it...
I want to drop a 5.0 in the sport as soon as I can afford it and can finda wrecked donor 4dr

Did the 95s have the control trac 4wd? I ask cause my 95 says 2wd/4wd Auto/4wd low is why I ask. But when its in 2wd and i stomp on it in the mud or dirt i havnt noticed it spin a front wheel.

no, your trasfer case has a true 2wd mode, the auto 4x4 didn't come until 96 or 97.

Interesting, the first post mentions a 2001 Sport Trac having a 2WD selection. Did something change in the GEM of the Sport Trac, or was this a typo? Who else has a 4WD Sport Trac who could say?

o ok cool. Any idea why it says auto under 4wd though? I meen when i kick it into 4wd auto it all kicks in and there is always 11 tire up front spinning. thats why I asked. cause it lists it as 2wd / 4wd auto / 4wd low just something I was curios about.
