I heard mercon V is the incorrect fluid to add, despite it being the original fluid? The guy at auto zone said I would be fine but I chose to play it safe.

Dex/Merc.

I used the "DEX/MERC" equivalent store brand in the t-case of my 97' Exp., got it from the big "O" store. It's nice because I can use it in my 2000 GTP too!

Yes ATF like Mercon III works awesome or you can run Ford transfer case fluid

The guys at Autozone may know next to nothing when it comes to maintenance practices. (I know because I worked at a similar auto parts store as a late teenager and knew almost nothing).

Mercon V isn't completely backwards compatible with regular Mercon, so stick with regular Mercon (or transfer case fluid, which is just Mercon in a different bottle).
