Over the upcoming holidays I'd like to do somethings to my X. One being installing a locker in my rear end, similar to how a stock one works, nothing extreme, just something to give me traction when I need it. A friend of mine dad works on heavy machines and such so I was planning on asking him to put it in, I'm just worried about the total cost. Locker and anything else I might need. Lets hear it.

Have you even tried looking at prices? It's not hard to find out what your cost is going to be. If you're having someone you know do it for you, there won't be any labor costs, and all you need to install it is some gear oil and the locker. Just pick out the locker you want and that's pretty much your total cost right there.

the locker cost depends on the locker, from $200-$800, plus install kit, plus labor, etc....

what kind do you want? simple or the best? selectable or not?

What gear ratio do you have now? Limited slip or not?
Also just because somebody is a mechanic does not necessarily mean they can install a locker........but it greatly depends on the type of locker you want.

I suggest a Detroit gearless or ARB :)

I just thought I could get some imput on here seeing as to what everyone has and how they like it. I'm just looking for something simple to help with the traction when I need it.
I have a 3.73 open rear right now, I'm just looking for something to perform similar to how a stock locker would but better. The guy that would be doing it could probably install it with his eyes closed actually.

What 410 said. Detroit and an ARB would be the best but also the most expensive. You would probably want the ARB.

(Randy's Ring and Pinion)
I was quoted 2,100 dollars for 4.56 gears front and rear with an E-Locker in the rear. The guy figured I would be spending enough that he said he would throw in the front E-Locker as well for 2,500 including tax.

I'm just looking for something cheap that gets the job done, its not going to be used off road, rarely at best. I'm also looking into a stock locker as well any imput on those?

Stock Ford's use the limited slip "track loc" - not a true locker - but it does provide traction to both rear wheels (it has a set of clutch plates that allow for some difference in axle shaft speeds - but which will deliver traction to both wheels if not pressed really hard).

A true locker - like those listed above - will positively lock both rear wheels together all the time, except when you are going around a corner with the power off...

There is also a "spool" which eliminates the spider gears in the carrier all together and which totally locks the axles together all the time... off-road use only - and then, not the best, as they are sometimes really hard to steer.

The "selectable" lockers like the elec-trac - ARB - ox locker, etc. lock like a spool when engaged, but act like an open axle when not. Some selectables also act like the limited slip when not engaged as well.

Do an internet search for selectable locker + ford 8.8 and you will get a ton of hits.

Track-locs are usually for sale used on eBay. You might want to try there for prices...

Just get a powertrax no slip, easy install, no B.S

I was looking for something to perform similar to a stock but I'm liking the way the powertrax sounds in operation, I'll look into it
