cost of makeing a sub box to a store bought one

Then what will I seal that whole with? Liquid nails like used in the rest of the construction?

I didn't use terminal cups.

Instead, I used house-jack style jacks for inside sound systems, and then bought the special plugs that go into them. Although this was a more expensive way if you buy them (I found mine in my parents garage), it worked out pretty good. It leaves a lot of lenience to upgrade the wiring diagram and such, among other things I suppose. All I did was silicon the inside of it up and it was perfect.

Just use terminal cups, easy cheap and fast.

Silicone.

Easy cheap and fast is usually never the best. And the way I explained is easy and cheap also....mighty quick too and more efficient...and if he wanted easy cheap and fast he would just go out and buy a box....

I think there is a certain mount of pride that goes into building your own box. That way when you show it off to some buddies you can say you made that rather than you bought it and put the sub in it. My $.02 worth :)

Right on the nose. Trust me, you'll recieve far better recognition for your system than someone with a pre-fabbed box, and by that point, won't even matter what subs it's housing. But not only that, the fun of making your own box is 20x better than buying it, it's more than draining your wallet.. and to someone with alot of money and just puts a 3,000 system in.. you can tell they really just don't care. It flows both ways I guess.

Agree completely. :)

One tool to help making the right box is to get BassBox Pro 6.0. This program lets you input all your stereo info such as what make and model speakers and amps and crossovers you have, the demensions of your box, and it will help build the box designs for you. This also lets you tune your box to what frequency you want to hit.

If anyone wants to try this program, send me a PM and I can let you download it from my computer.

I heard that if tou make a huge box then your sub will hit harder. Is this true? Where would I get the carpet 4 the box? Heay yo I want that program, but I have a mac.

Try doing a search for either BassBox pro 6.0 or ProBox 5.0. Just making a big box won't help. You need to see the specs of your speakers as to what cubic feet they need and will it be ported or sealed. Hell, even the length and diameter of the port will determine the sound of the box. There are a few factors to building the box. Try to get the program or see if someone you know has a PC that you can try the program. If you just make a box without doing the math, it might not make much bass at all.

bnichols04 I heard that if tou make a huge box then your sub will hit harder. Is this true?

No its not. First off you need to look at what your subs cubic feet requirments are. Secondly it all depends on how you port or seal your box. Do some research on box building before you decide to do this yourself. Building a box is easy as long as you have the tools. Store made boxes are CRAP! particle board and cheap carpet. Good luck with local places doing your things you will spend more on them than you did on your car audio. I wanted my 94 Explorer Dynamated and they told me $850....I went home said screw this and ripped my explorer apart and did it myself. If you want to save money and learn along the way I say build your box.

hey hey my new box is perfectly sealed....least last time i saw it..been 2 weeks :(...i miss my boom boom lol

I think I am going to make my own box. Do I have to special order MDF from home depot? Where do I get the carpet from? The only thing is that I don't kow how big to make it. I need a program or something to tell me how big to make the box so that it is perfict with the sub specs so it sounds as good as it could. I know that was a lot of questions but I need them answered cuz I am going to start on the box on wensday.

Get 3/4"MDF from Home Depot. The last time I bought some it was $25 for an 8'x4' sheet. They will cut it if you need them to. When you build your box, just see the specs on your subs as to what cubic feet of space they need and just do the math. (length x width x height=cubic area)

u can get the carpet at home depot also they have super cheap stuff and slightly better carpet

MDF is typically closer to $18-19 from my buying experiences at Lowes and Home Depot. That's all I know.

Remember, thats INTERIOR dimensions. You need to add material thickness and speaker displacement to the equation. Otherwise you will end up will a box that is too small.

How much will a "too small" box effect the sound? I'm also building a sub box to fit in my stock location to fit a 6w0.

what do I have to exactily do to calculate the dimentions of the outside of the box I want for my 10

Let P = the thickness of the MDF, for example, 3/4"

(((D + 2T)x(H + 2T)x(W + 2T)))/1728 = cubic feet of the chamber.

Hopefully you can catch my drift. Just add twice the size of your board thickness to your measurements, and then divide your final number after multiplying all 3 (H/W/D) by 1728. This will produce your chamber cu ft.
