Could A/C Comp. Cause burning rubber smell

Could my A/C compressor and/or clutch be causeing a burning rubber smell? Last spring/summer (i think) I unplugged the compressor because I knew that there was no pressure in the lines and I didn't want it to seize, now I am getting a burning rubber smell. Could resistance in the clutch cause this or what else could it be?

Doubt it... Clutch floats freely on compressor shaft via a sealed roller bearing. When the bearing goes bad you will hear a much noticable noise and sloppy pulley. I would think the burning smell would have to be something else.

Could there be any way the clutch it kind of locking up momentarily without power, there is no fluid in the system and it was run for a while with no fluid? What are other common things that burn?

I seriously doubt the clutch would ever engage, unless there is sufficient pressure in the system. (40psi or so)

Could be clutch

The AC clutch on my 94 didn't make any noise until it locked up solidly. I did smell some burnt rubber a few days before it went out.
