will a mustang v6 even bolt into an explorer or are they different?

Mustang V6

At least one forum member is in the process of replacing his "tired" Explorer SOHC with a late model Mustang V6 long block. I believe he plans to retain the Explorer intake manifolds and peripherals (water and power steering pump, alternator, A/C compressor). Using a low mileage salvaged engine is less expensive than rebuilding. Here's a link:
Just found an almost new engine and turbo kit for the Xsport

Yes, the "block" part of the mustang engine will bolt in. You may have to use your motor mount brackets but the engine is pretty much the same. There will probably be updated parts internally (for those that didn't pan out on the earlier engines)

The mustang intake is different so if you retain all your explorer intake stuff just re-use on the new engine. The PCM (computer) is different on the mustang...because of DBW, different intake, MAF, IAC...etc

Basically, it's an updated version from the older explorer engines and the intake is designed different..(probably because the lighter mustang can use a different RPM range as compared to the explorer that is much heavier and needs torque down low to get moving)

Camshaft

Your comment started me thinking about the differences in weight and function for the two vehicles. I suspected that there might be camshaft differences. I haven't been able to find the OEM part numbers for the different engines but the costs for the 2005 Mustang camshafts are significantly less than the 2002 Explorer camshafts.

sorry 2 be a pain but anyone know where i can get some engine pics so i can compare differences between usa and aus engines

cheers

tech support

If you're really thinking about purchasing Super Six Motorsports' short block I would contact them with your technical support questions. They appear to be quite knowledgeable and for the money they charge they should be very willing to help. If you do buy one of their engines, I suggest that you purchase an engine preoiler to protect it. I suspect that the engine (especially the chain guides) will last twice as long if equipped with a preoiler. I plan to install an Accusump before my future engine rebuild or replacement.

thanks for the help i appreciate it being in aus im limited to resources so i was thinking of importing stage 3 heads there cams and that short block then ill be putting a custom turbo kit made here my aim is at least a low 12. if you now of a better way to build that i can access online im all ears mate

contact henson

I suggest that you contact James Henson of Henson Performance. He's an SCT dealer and had a turbo charged SOHC until recently when it got totalled while towing a boat. I suspect that the lower end of the SOHC is strong enough for occasional high boost runs. You might not need the Super Six block unless you frequently race at the dragstrip. I'm very pleased with the custom tune he is developing for my Sport. You can PM him and he will answer.

I'm pretty sure the 4.0 SOHC cams on the supersix website are no longer available. I believe crane cams did the re-grinds (the cams are stock cams that are reground and don’t know of anyone that makes an aftermarket version from scratch) and stopped.

I’m not aware of cam differences between the explorer and mustang.

The motor should hold 350RWHP on an explorer for awhile maybe more for a lighter mustang.

just wanna make sure im clear on what he can do 4 me before i go messaging him. is he for tuning or do you think he maybe considering selling parts off his truck
sorry if its a dumb question and im missing the obvious lol

thanks again for all the help

Tune & advice

James can do the tune for you and might have time to advise about the need for a super block. I suspect his block was stock and held together with a turbo for many years. There's also a tuner in North Carolina with a turbo on a stock block. Explorer Express sells a supercharger for the V6 and I can't recall them specifying the need for a custom block. Personnally, if money was not a factor, I would prefer a supercharger over a turbocharger. Its less work to install and results in a less cluttered engine compartment.

2008 stock 4.0 V-6 with a Paxton model 1200 w/ liquid intercooler, was making 298rwhp with 9lbs of boost, installed the 2.7 pulley to make 15lbs of boost, put down 365rwhp but ran out of fuel pump, need to up grade the fuel pump and possibly the injectors and see what we can get out of it from that point.

Jeff,
Any miles on that paxton yet?

So far, Yolanda doesn't like the look of the new mustang (2010+). That means for more power we either replace the 06 someone elses problems (read: used GT) or supercharge what she has now... I'd rather keep what we have...

I know these sound funny since "that" is a recent install but I have questions...
How's reliability on that style sc been?
Is it killing gas mileage?
How it handle long sustained highway miles?
How does it handle 110F ambient air?

Damn, Mark!!!!

I could write a book on all those questions LMAO!

Ok, since I seem to drive this car a bit more than the owner, I probably have a better idea, than he does.

Not that I'm going to get into it in this reply there are things I have had to fix/mod to get everything to settle in, that also includes a lot of the Shelby conversion to the car.

This car drives like it's bone stock till you give it a kick (9psi) then it runs really strong like a GT, the tune has more to do with drivability than ANYTHING, the original tune was crap, the 2nd tune was really fat and safe but netted fairly poor mileage, like 12-15mpg, and it would burn your eyes at an idle, and fart black/rich smoke from the side pipes with a blip of the throttle, and it was kind of chunky down low, since I was replacing the pulley there was no reason to have the tune changed a third time for this issue.

So after changing the pulley I had it re-tuned again, and the start-up, idle, and low-end driveability came back to like stock, and the power comes on very smooth and violently strong all the way to redline/15lbs., very linear .

Since I live here where the temps are similar to yours I have seen and have been correcting, both Paxton/Votech's cooling issues, and Shelby's issue's, and there is more of this to come, for my first phase and prototype to be installed and RIGHT now being tested as I type this see this thread on the H/E I have:

I'll I'm going to say it you are truly getting what you pay for with this.

As for all the other Q's I can tell you I have driven the Terlingua both to car shows on the freeway, and to the race track, raced and back, with very few problems, but as I fix all the little issues, which are almost non-existant now, I have never felt as though this car would leave me stranded, I have no problem with jumping in it and going where ever, in fact I sent it with the customer to the Shelby bash, with confidence that it would hold together, IF it breaks, it will probably be at fault for something unforeseen.

Mark, if you would like to chew more on this, call me, you have my number, I will be glad to walk and talk with you about the whole kit-and-kaboodle.
