Hey everyone, I just changed out the recall switch for the cruise control on my X. I found a new harness at the local junkyard out of another 2nd gen. My old switch only had one fuse but the new one has two. It hooked right up and for the first time in years, I now have cruise control again. Anyway, if the switch hooks up and works, can it harm my truck if it has an additional fuse? Any insight is appreciated. The old fuse was Ford but the new one is aftermarket; they both have the same tags.

I can't think of any reason an extra fuse would cause any harm. Its more of an extra protection than anything. A fuse just kills power to the unit in case of a power surge.

I remember a few years ago ford had a factory recall for something with cruise control. I think it was something with adding a fuse or something like that. Maybe this one is after the recall work was done, and yours never had the recall repair? Thats just a guess.

Yeah the recall added a harness with a fuse in it. Mine hade the recall done on it but the fuse had burned out since then. This new switch just has an extra fuse as far as I can tell. But I guess if the cruise control is working again then it should be fine. Well I hope anyway lol. Thanks for the input.

I'm new to explorers - only 6 days & am investigating why my Cruise don't work , have been to Utube & checked the usual suspect master cylinder switch.
The short loom attached to it only has one fuse cap , and is No'd C312K , with a warning that there is another internal inaccessible fuse & if it fails the pukka Ford sticker advises to fit a service part # 9F924

Whatever one of those is .

I seem to have power all the way through to the servo on the NS wing , so am guessing that is the problem ?

ford will still honer the recall. its a safety recall. they have the possibility to catch fire, even if the truck is off. they would either give you a jumper harness, like the one you have, or replace the cruise brake switch (on top of the master cylinder). also, if your cruise isnt working (and your horn as well) there is a 10 amp fuse inside the power distribution box under the hood that is known to blow.
and no, if you have two fuses on there, it wont hurt anything.

It might be. Check if the fuse is burned out. Does yours have the blue tag on it? If that's the problem, the Ford dealer sells the harness 9f924 for $20 last time I checked. I was lucky to get mine from the junkyard for $5.

I'll look into it , but being a UK member - I can't see £20 being charged , never mind the $20 you guys experience !

Most Main dealer in the UK don't have any charges below £50 - ($75??) as they have so many staff to employ who don't do anything apart from smile at you !!

For reasons best known to Henry Ford - my Cruise started working yesterday & all I'd done was pull the multiplugs off the master cyl & the servo !!

I had gone through all the fuses previously and replaced about 4 that had blown anyway . I'm waiting for some new bonnet props & the inetrior light binnacle from a breaker - so more fun to come

Nice meeting you all .

If the problem is intermittent, it's not a burned fuse. I would suspect the CC servo itself (my '98 is on the third one by now...) Most Explorers (not sure about the Brit version) have the ability to diagnose the CC system by pushing the buttons in some fancy sequence and watching the CC light respond. The procedure is documented in the factory manual.

I'll have to look out a factory manual , problem is they stopped selling these trucks here around 2002 in UK , there is the Ranger double cab truck/ backie type ; newbies going around a lot recently - Ford must have a deal on !!
Pity is that I'm not impressed with the local Ford main dealers - my last Ford was a '94 Maverick ( Terrano) - for the last year & they were useless with knowledge about that, prior to that I had a 1974 Escort Sport in 1979 !!

Factory manual - does it have an ISBN. # ? I've got the Haynes manual #36024 & that doesn't even mention Cruise or the central locking , as I've just had to test out the failed actuator in the NSR door & ordered a scrap item - £25 !!

Rgds

The FSM (Ford Service Manual) is a three-book set, big and pricey. It's very detailed and generally intended for the dealers' service departments. No comparison at all to the Haynes.
I don't believe that the FSMs were generally available through book stores or libraries. These were sold to the public through a company called Helm (www.helminc.com). I took a look at their website, and they seem to be out of print for those older models. They do have a (quite expensive) on-line subscription service access to these manuals.
If you are interested in purchasing these books, Ebay is probably the best source. In the past Ebay was flooded with DVD versions of these service manuals, but seems that this has now dried up, because they started enforcing the license restrictions.
Alldata, Mitchell, and possibly some others have similar subscription-only access to good quality, detailed service manuals.

Hopefullly someone in possession of the DVD version for your model year will cut and paste the CC test procedure here. Good Luck!

What a pity its not available - I will have a look - ebay is still awash with the Land Rover Range Rover garage manual on CD over here - in fact I've got both & a hard copy too - it weighs a ton in a lever arch file !!

For some reason the 99 FSM appears to be a rarity, but saw a couple of the three-book 98 set on ebay. Should be close enough, as there are no significant differences between these two models.
By the way, the third, horizontal format book in the set is the EVTM. It contains detailed electrical schematics (not covered by the other two), and is very useful.
Be warned that these books are heavy, so shipping to the UK may cost a small fortune.
