27 spline

I thought it was 30 spline.

from what i was reading it sounded like it is 30 but , I don't know for sure

I am confirming it's 30. I should know, i've been diligently researching D35 axle shafts for the past two weeks.

thats what i was thinking from what i read, just the post saying it 27 had me wondering

Hmm, doesn't the D44 ttb have 30 spline shafts? Because in another thread of mine about extended ttb beams, it discusses replacing D35 shafts with D44 shafts because the spline count apparently matches. But i did look it up again and found that the D35 is indeed 27 spline.

Don't forget the D35 is also high-pinion aka reverse rotation.
Since you only want 4.10's, if you really search around junk yards you might be able to find some since a couple X's came from factory with 4.10's. If you order them new Randy's ring and pinion will take care of you. Just call them up and tell them you have an explorer. They will set you up with all the right gear parts and installation kits.

Isn't there a carrier break either in the 8.8 or the TTB at 3.55?
That would mean that unless you currently have 3.55's or lower (a higher number) you would need a completely new carrier to fit 4.10's. ie, if you currently have 3.27's then there is one more part to be looking fore besides gears and master install kits, a new carrier.

hmm.. confused so it is 27 spline, thanks for clearing it up, i also called a mechanic that i know and he said the same, so now i know that it is forsure 27 thanks for the responces!!:)

Sorry, it's NOT 30, it's 27.

There is also a dana 35 that was the rear axle for alot of Jeeps. Maybe that's where you guys are getting the 30 spline confusion.

The Dana 35 on the rear in Jeeps is 27 spline. I know because I have a Jeep YJ with the D35. I was under the impression that the D35 TT in the Explorer is on par, strength-wise with the Dana 44 axle and uses 30 spline.

When i regeared 3.27s to 4.10s I had the same questions regarding carrier brakes. I ordered Yukon gears from Randy's and did NOT need a new carrier. A new carrier would be needed if you currently have a Limited Slip in the diff.

Its 27.

The weakest link on both axles is normally the axle u-joints, not the axle splines (plus, D44 shafts usually have a huge necked-down spot right next to the splines too, D35 shafts don't).
