Out of curiosity, is this project going to cost more than a used Mog?:D

Haven't seen any cheap used Mogs yet....

I think you did to!!!:D

$2400 for hiem joint kits!!! Getting pricey!!!

I have seen a lot of older Unimogs on eBay go for $8-10K.

What is the ballpark price for these 404s and swap?

Well I'm looking at so far:

Pair of Portal 404s: $1800
Torque tube conversion: $200
Disk Brake conversion: $600 per axle
Heim Joints: $2400
Tubing: $1300+

Then you tires.....beer...food....damn it...its gonna cost!

Those older Mogs don't have all the conversions required to run today's tech.

Derrick, may not need that big of heim joints. At least not for all 18.

You still thinking of running +/- 42s with a BW1354?

Atlas II: $2000

For a 3.0 or 3.8 not including shifters, oil or shipping.

A 4.3 is going to run $2400 + the rest of that.

I don't have pricing on a 5:1 yet either.

Okay, I litterally just blew threw this thread and didn't pick up all the details. I haven't personally built a 3 or 4 link but I've done TONS of reading and research on them.

1st off, definately use DOM, not Chromo unless you're going to heat treat it but then it also makes field repairs iffy and a PITA.

2nd, I have sitting within arms reach of me as I type a store bought $12 weld in bung that would work with 2" x .120 tubing so I know it exists. It accepts 1-1/4" heims.

3rd, For some good reading on design and theory of the linked system check out this thread off another forum I'm active on. These guys design and build off road race trucks... Some of them are SERIOUS builders and have been involved with build $400K trucks. It's long and you've gotta weed thru it but there's TONS of info here...

4th, check out this book. It's road race written but the theory's can translate right over to offroad. Herb Adams

5th, There's a company called Newline in SoCal that makes a weld together lower link kit. I can't find photos though cause their webpage is down but I'm looking, I'll post as soon as I can to see if it's maybe something usable or to get ideas off.

Ah yes Destroy Motorsports. Forgot about them.
Those would probably help out some.

My buddy Ryan Lopez(pez) works at Tolemar mfg. down there. Hes right across the street from Camburg so I'm having him do some talkin to. Hopefully he can get me a smokin deal on hiems and coil-overs. **** and a fuel cell. I'm not sure about buying stuff straight from a prerunner shop. I mean there stuff isn't exactly made for high clearance. I know they take a beating but I need high clearence stuff.

I ordered DOM so no worries there.

Yeah, I know what you're saying about the prerunner vs. crawling and clearance. But the function is the same. You still have to deal with anti squat and roll center when designing, figuring your link lengths and mount locations. Plus if you're running standard coils all the way around those wouldn't work. Something Like what Perry McNeil does though may. He runs a 4 link in the rear with standard coils. Either way you've got a CRAZY project ahead of you. Just thought I'd offer up some forms of research info I've found just by searching out of curiosity.

That would be cool if your buddy can hook you up with parts for a good deal thru Camburg. Jerry over there is a good guy to work with and will answer a lot of design questions if you have them.

Here's the Newline kit...

I appreciate the info you posted. I appreciate everyones help. :)

I have ordered tow books from amazon.com about this stuff. I know I have plenty of reading ahead of me but right now I'm just tryin to get **** here. That way when the time comes.....its here. Not 5 days out some where back east.

Keep the ideas coming!!!

Not a bad idea. Prob wouldn't take up any more ground clearance than a 4-link and would take a beating in the meantime. I saw one of those kits on eBay a while back for a ranger.

Well it does sit pretty low but notice how low on the frame it's mounted on this Ranger. Notice the bottom of the body is level with the center line on the tire. I don't think my Exploder sit's NEARLY that low. Raise it up and the arm is going to gain clearance... Prerunners tend to sit low to the ground. I'm sure if you move your mounts up and also with the higher portal axles it'll be up quite a bit...

Sorry this pic is so big.

All right, now I'm readin ya.:) Those joints don't look to be heim though. Wonder if those would bind up with the axle twisting???

The other cool factor is the ease of adding coil overs.:D
