Derricks X getting Portals.......

Yeah David, I looked at those humm-9s for a week or so. I couldn't let go the price of those things.

Yeah I went with the M-Tech bender with degree ring. Its manual right now but I'm sure I'll be going to hydrualic by the end of the project. I also got there tube notcher with it. Alot faster then using a grinder.

Alittle more update for everyone.

10 3/4" heim joints have shown up.
Tube Bender/M-Tech
28 Gallon Fuel Cell
Diest Limit Straps

I'm going down to Utah tomarrow to look around at killer axles warehouse and see what they got and take alook at a few of there vehicles.

Just saw this, man that would be sweet! And I'm prolly not much help but I'll go anywhere for free beer and burgers.

Funniest thing I ever heard was a hard core off road guy telling you to keep your truck as low to the ground as possible... what is the world comin to?

The lower your center of gravity is the less chance of rollover...i'll be bringing down my truck a few inches for that very reason(already rolled it once). I'd rather hack out my fenders for tire clearance than have the extra height.

Take a look at any rock crawler or desert runner. Low center of gravity and lots of wheel travel. Mud boggers need the added height for huge tires and keeping the mud/water out of the engine, but they don't do anything but go straight on level ground.

As for the update, there's a new plan in the works...

this truck is gonna be awesome. it took me a while to read the thread but well worth it.

i hope you end up with some ridiculously big tires like 46s or 49s. but it's gonna be some work post pics ounce work gets under way

The portals aren't going to happen. The idea I think was better then the acutal working beast and larger then first budgeted for. I know Derrick likes to keep his secrets so I cannot disclose what he had in mind. However, it will be nice when completed and you will be happy.

Would portals fit nicely in a rock buggy?...hmmmm...

my guess is that it's gonna a new rig.
unimog based or it's gonna be a buggy based off the explorer or a whole new tube buggy with some craziness.

eigther way it'll be cool

Seems like Kent always beats me to the punch.:D NOT THIS TIME!!!:D

Update: Portals have been paid for. Waiting for me to pick-up.
Tubing and more tubing is at work waiting for me.
Aluminum and diamond are here.

I think thats it for now.

I pulled out of doing this to my Explorer cause I love the damn thing too much and girl friend had a say in it to. So I have my buddy at a local junk yard looking for a 2nd gen. Explorer Sport thats in some what fair shape. So my plans are still a go but waiting for better weather and hopefully my 2nd gen. If I can't get the 2nd gen then yes Kent is right I'll be doing a buggy with portals with Explorer skin.

Thats disappointing in one way but exciting in another. I want lots of pics

I know about lower center of gravity, just sounds funny thats all, cause most of the time we talk about lift, not lowering.

EDIT: Yes I know it would still be higher than a normal explorer

here for updates.

That's an even hotter plan - have your big X as well as a second "X" with Portals under it!!

I agree :D :chug:

Actually I'm working with Kent(NOTAJP) on doing a cheap axle swap on my 92' to fit some huge tires then working on the portals. So one will be a pavement pounder and one will be a ummmm hmmmm how do I put this??? A big Dawg???:D

so cool. here to see how this comes out...

Progress is going very slow. My current Explorer is almost ready to go under the knive for a Dana 30 swap. Well as soon as NOTAJP gets my brackets made. :p ;)

The portals at my buddy Levi's shop now instead of in Utah like they were for 2 months. He owns his own junkyard so hes got a search for a some what straight 2nd Gen sport for me. Kinda hard to get one within a reasonable price that hasn't been rolled or is just flat out totalled.

Don't worry though.....this project is still on a "green light".

Yeah Yeah Yeah. I hear ya. Belive me, I'd have these done a long time ago if it were up to me. The steel guys are a PITA, parts on on back order, then this weekend my chop saw and grinder take a dump. The mod gods are not happy with me lately.....

I think I want to build this as bad as Derrick does. Once we get all the parts it should only be a weekend and the big dawg will be the biggest dawg in Idaho again. :D

Yeah, enough excuses already. If it were up to me, i'd still be scratching me head as to where to start. So get to gettin, I wana see it :burnout: !
