Can someone please post the Forscan change(s) needed to be made to disable the signature lights on a 2018 Explorer XLT? Much appreciated if you do. Thanks!

My agency just purchased a 2016 Ford Explorer which will be used as a police vehicle. It does not have the "police package" as it will be used as an undercover vehicle. It's just an XLT from the dealer.

I do a lot of surveillance and the LED Signature Lights make that a little bit tough at night. I have read and read on how to disable these and I can't seem to find an answer. I don't care if I have to cut wires...I just need to know which ones to cut :)

Thanks!
JT

My husband and I ran into this problem just last night. We took our children to the drive-in where we needed to simply be in park with the lights off as to not bother those around us and inhibit the screen view. We looked at many many sites with no such luck as to how to turn off the white light strip around the headlights. That's when my husband had the idea to simply pop the hood and unplug the lights for the time being while we watched the movie. I don't think that's the best solution for each and every time that you'd like the lights off completely. But I know that is the solution we will use the next time we go to the drive-in. I hope that helped

I hear ya. I’m having a kill switch/toggle installed and the switch put under the dash (hidden under steering wheel area).

Welcome to the Forum.
If you turn the vehicle off then the Signature Lights will also turn off. There is no setting to turn them off otherwise. I can't confirm right now if they come on in the accessory position.

Oh I'm sorry. I meant that the car was still running just put in park. Not completely turned off. But if you run across a way to get the lights surrounding the headlights to turn off I will appreciate the info. It really wasn't long process for my husband to unplug the lights. I just think that there's probably surely a way to have all of the lights off while the car is still running, right?

Per Ford Tech’s (several of them) there is “no” way to kill the Signature Lights (LED Halo surrounds on headlight housing). They come on with the key in the “On” position and stay on (whether the DRL’s are on/off) and there is “no” programmable way to disable them (they operate when vehicle is on and are not tied into the vehicle’s BCM or headlight controls).

Ford won’t tell you as you’ll be cutting into the factory wiring, but a heavy duty toggle/switch on the LIN wire that goes to the Signature Light LED will work on it (look up the light wiring schematic and you’ll see what I’m talking about). They won’t do this at dealerships or recommend this as it’s splicing into the vehicles wiring. I’m having my shop do it as I need to (work vehicle, enough said).

Good luck.......

Thank you so much! I appreciate you taking the time to send me this info. I'm going to relay it to my husband.

Do you really need the vehicle to be idling for an hour or two? That isn't exactly the best thing you can do for an engine. As member sn1088 mentioned, you would have to modify the Signature Lights wiring as there is no other way to disable them.

If you do plan on modifying the lights put a relay that is controlled by the switch in the cab. Granted LED's don't pull that much current but a relay is always a safer bet.

It was just for a drive in movie. Unfortunately, the drive-in near our home is riddled with mosquitoes so we have to stay in the car with the windows rolled up. Which in turn means we need the car on for the air conditioning and radio. We don't do the drive in that often so I'm not too worried about it. Other than that we never need to be an idle really.

Keep in mind the LIN is a specialized communication circuit. If something were to fail with the headlight assembly and they discover the LIN has been messed with be prepared for a warranty coverage battle. Last I heard a new headlamp assembly was around $1000.

Does anyone know which wire it is to put in a switch to toggle on and off the signature lighting?

Thanks for the advice everybody. We talked to a few different people at Ford today, but none of them could give us an answer. The only thing left to do is to install an aftermarket switch that allows me to manually kill the headlights. That install is scheduled for tomorrow. I'll let y'all know how it turns out if you're interested.

Hi JT, I’m a retired LEO now PI and I have been racking my brain trying to figure out how to shut down the signature lights/Halo’s on my 2018 Explorer XLT.

Can you or anyone please help with any suggestions? Apparently Forescan won’t address the Signature Lights. Did you or anyone have any success with a switch?

I attempted to purchase a PIM and the company refused to sell it to me.

Any help from any folks would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks, Bob

So I have a 2016 XLT... I was wondering if there was a way to disable the signature LED lighting strip and enable the turn signals as the parking lights ( like on the PIU). Ive tried a few things on forescan but no luck. Any ideas if it can be done??
