I have purchased a used 1998 Explorer. On the dash to the left of the radio is what appears to be an aftermarket switch labeled "Disable Control Trac". can anybody tell me what exactly that switch does? Should my gas mileage improve if Control Trac is disabled?

Your gas mileage will not improve...search here for
"Brown wire mod"...I think it was popular years ago. The switch does exactly what it says. It breaks the circuit to the electromagnetic clutch in the transfer case. Do some research on ControlTrac, wikipedia has a decent page on it.

Yes assuming it's wired correctly it will just break the circlet to the transfer case giving you 2wd.
It's good to have if you like doing donuts.
Your truck has a live front axel (there's no hub locks or center axel disconnect on a 98) so it won't effect mileage.
