its mainly about the signal for the speed sensor

95-97 used a sensor n the transfer case
98+ used the ABS signal

No, it relates to other things/features that were not in the later versions. It's been ages since someone went through this, Eric with his 302 Sport could say. But it's simpler to use the best MC for the given vehicle. Stick a 95-97 MC in a 95-97 Explorer, use the 98-01 MC for everything else.

I applaud the research done by 98formulaLS1, my input is only based on what others had learned in doing the swap. People have had issues(failures) with using a MC that differed from their truck. Hopefully that was and is related to something that 98formulaLS1 learned and refers to in his research. It's always great to be able to swap parts between vehicles, the more the better. Keep at it.

the main issue was that a 98 message center woul not read speed till 40Mph in in 95-07, this is because it was not programmed to read the speed sensor found in a 95-97

SIMPLE

true there were more features in the 95-97, but this isnt the biggest issue

i know this write up made my install very simple. the only problem is that it will not read the correct fuel level (sports have smaller tanks) and its driving me nuts! i have tried everything that i can think of. if someone knows a fix for it (and i know erics didn't work, i believe i tried it) post it up PLEASE!

I thought Eric had his fuel level working right. He mentioned changing something in the MC wiring, moving a wire or similar?

read the pdf, there's a pin that needs to be run with a 5 volt signal if you have the smaller tank and ground if you have the larger tank

that's one of my problems, i have no idea where to find a 5v signal. don, yes, i think he did mention something about grounding the wire, but i tried that and it didn't work. i also let it be, and it didn't work. if someone knows where i can find a 5v wire to tap into SAFELY on a 98 sport, please let me know.

the engine select is +5v for a V6 wire the fuel tank select to the same wire

Ditto, many of the OEM circuits run on 5v, mainly the PCM wiring. There should be one there in the center dash area, check a wiring manual for the truck.

I tried to access the pdf file, with no success. Does anyone have a copy of the file that they can share? I am trying to install the message center. Thanks.

If you have the complete harness out of a same year model, can you swap the entire harness instead of splicing? (i.e. 96 eddie bauer and 96xlt)
