Could be the heatshield or some broken catalyst inside. Broken catalyst would be a good reason to replace your cats.

there are heat guards welded onto the outer skin of the catalytic converter, Fords are notorious for these coming loose and rattling, very likely this is your problem, fix is to re-weld, tie down with metal strapping, or rip the guards off.

It is also possible, yes that the catalyist inside the converter has come loose and can cause a rattle.
Does the truck run okay? run hot?

it seems to run ok ...well i think im just going to take off the catyloic converters competely to gain some horsepower

thank for the help

Should probably delete that last post if you don't wanna get reamed.

wia till it is cold( the engine) ad bang on the cat with your fist it it rattles thats your rattle, then go to your local parts store and get a lage hose clamp, and put it arounf the cat and problem solved, thats what we do at dealerships, good luck

When my cat started to rattle, it was the heat shield coming loose so I just ripped it off. About a month later I just replaced the with a new cat and flowmaster cat-back system. To replace the cat itself wasn't that hard but we did have to use a sawzall to shorten a pipe about 1.5-2 inches after that it was just bolt on. The replacment was about 225.

I had to remove the cats from our 91 to remove the transmission and noticed a rattle in the cats. A 3 foot bar later and the rattle was gone. One chunk was wedged in and looked like it would almost plug the exhaust but not any more.

Are you sure it isn't the heat shield between the transmission and the catalytic converter? Those are notorious for coming loose (one bolt and two clips to the bottom of the tranny pan is all that holds them on).

Brain, you just described mine, previously. Ripped it off a year ago.

By the way, J.C. Whitney sells replacement universal cats, made by the same company that supplies MAC. I bought one for $50 on sale, but haven't used it yet.

Glacier, have you received the 5R55W yet? Does anyone know if the front half of the output shaft is the same as the front half of the 5R55E output shaft? I'd like to put the 5R55W piece into my 5R55E, to change transfer cases. Night,
DW

Yes, the CAT do rattle from the inside. My 97 Astro van had the rattle from the inside, no driving problem, passed emission test with flying color.
It just make a lot of noise when idling and while acelerating. I put up with the noise since I only drive it once a while. But my wife got fed up and had the CAT replaced since it is her daily driver.
