someone on here said that i could have the gt40 heads on my 97 ford exp v8 if it was built later in the year. it says it was made 12-96 on the door. i would assume that would be late that model year. can anyone tell me if this is a gt40 head and where is a place that u can see whole break downs of explorer parts or just the engine and drive train. also. the gt40 heads are the same that they used on the cobra's right.

Yeah, you have the GT40 heads.

You have an Explorer upper intake (pretty much the Cobra intake)
GT40 lower intake
GT40 heads
Explorer camshaft
stamped 1.6 rockers
4r70w tranny
borg warner 4404 tcase

What else do you want to know?

Section, what makes you so sure?
I have 2 96 Explorers and a 97 Mercury, all 5.0L.
One of the 96's has the P heads, one does not.
The mercury does have the P heads.

Look on the passenger side head, just behind the alternator, in the casting it will say P, these are the better heads.
The intakes, etc are very similar.

the P heads use external EGR, meaning the EGR is actually a tube from the passenger side exhaust manifold, instead of the earleir style internal of the intake manifolds.

Yes, the EGR type is easier to identify. I bought a 97 GT40 engine, it will be my mockup engine for my KB 2200 supercharger. Regards,

You probably just have the regular GT heads, no P.

97 GT40 could have P heads.
97 Feb was the change over.

so whats better the gt40 heads or the p heads. i would think the gt40 heads would be being they are cobra heads. and my truck was made in 12-96 stamped on inside of door.

I have a 97 5.0 that was built in 11\96. But it has the external egr setup. Not sure if I have the P heads though.

LOOK AT THE HEAD AS DESCRIBED EARLIER.
If it has a P stamped on it, well then its pretty obvious which heads you have.

The angle of the spark plugs and the external EGR should also be signs.

The P heads are BETTER, more power better flow.

wife run my 97 explore 302 a little hot today water pump leaking now its got a cliking nose in it what is it
