I changed the oil today and was reminded of what ******* of a setup the oil drain bolt is.

The drain hole is horizontal, when you put a catch pan under it the oil just goes horizontal and splashes all over your torsion bar.

Has anyone come up with a way to direct the oil straight down into the bucket?

Edit: Answering my own question. https://www.fumotooildrainvalve.com/?target=model_product&modelId=16385

Your drain plug is horizontal? Mines vertical. Different oil pan for Australia?

Plug is horizontal on my SOHC...if I am describing it correctly.

Ah ok, I have the OHV.

Yeah, changing the oil in a SOHC creates a major mess. Not only does the oil splash all over the place when you remove the drain plug, but the filter also drips/spills onto a piece that sticks out from the frame. I've used to have one of those drain valves on a PT Cruiser my daughter had, but I was always afraid it might catch on something and open at the wrong time. It's one of the reasons I use Mobile 1 Extended Performance oil (fewer oil changes).

I put a piece of aluminum foil, with the edges folder up. on the torsion bar to at least prevent the oil from running down the bar into the frame and lower control arm.

Years ago, probably in the 90's, the Fumoto was a big sensation on this site. I bought one then, and still have it on my Ranger's 4.0 OHV. I appreciate it every time I change my oil, never a drip.
I highly recommend getting one, it's a very quality piece.

Back when I was in the oil change business we used these.

I've had a Fumoto on my Ex for about 2 years now. Really makes oil changes a snap. Nice thing is that initially you don't have to open it all the way so you don't get that gushing stream out the side of the pan. Open it up a bit and let it drain without splashing and then when most of the oil is out, open it up all the way to let the rest drain out. It takes longer but it adds to valuable garage tinker time. Also, there is an optional small plastic keeper lock that keeps valve from turning unless removed. Never had any problems with it. I also use M1 high mileage 5w-30 and the M1 extended performance filter #M1-301 .

Edit: I think Fumoto also offers a length of 3/8" plastic tube that can attach to the valve nipple, but any plastic tube could be attached to divert the oil stream.

When I do the oil change on my wife's 99 Sport w/SOHC I use a piece of cardboard about the size of printer paper (11"x9") & put a little crease in it making it like a wide V shape & put my drain pan under the cardboard which I hold opposite the drain plug so when I pull the drain plug out the oil hits the cardboard & falls right into the drain pan, no more mess.

Good thread, helpful tips for keeping that oil off the floor.

When my dino acts up, I bury him for a few million years and wait 'til it becomes dino fluid.

OOh... now I get it :D

He's at it again everybody!!!

Fumoto FTW!!!

I've used Fumoto drain valves since the mid '80s. On my Gen 2's I can run the plastic tube straight into the 5 quart container from my last dino fluid change.

Now if someone could come up with something I could hang off the front of the engine to control the spillage from removing the dino fluid filter from my 5.0 I'd REALLY be happy. This last time I took a 12"x18" sheet of aluminum fdino fluid (f.o.i.l) and formed a trough to sort of control it. I also removed the plastic "air diverter" (4-10mm bolts) to allow better access to the filter.

PS: There's no reason to change the o.i.l in the word "f.o.i.l" . . .

Yeah, the 5.0 filters aren't an easy change either, but at least the oil pan drain plug is in a better position. The filter might not be so messy on the 5.0 if the front was level, but it's not worth jacking the back up when the front is up on my ramps. I also find that it's often frustrating finding just the correct angle to get the 5.0 oil filter to screw on.

I also use a piece of foil over the p/s hoses and sway bar to not get them full of oil from the filter.

I don't know what the 5.0 setup looks like but how about a remote filter?
You could put it wherever you like.

It looks like a drip pan. I guess it's some sort of splash pan?

Yeah, we called them splash pans. Worked well for those side spurters. Bottom would sit snugly in the drain pan and it would lean against any suspension parts to shield them.

Gotta have the right tools if you're doing it all the time.

Change your oil in a friend's garage. Problem solved.
