1998 Ford Explorer XLT
On my way to work i was in high 4x4 going about 30mph down a backroad. (the night before ice formed and snow was on the road and the county plowed and cindered the pavment.) hit the pothole and foot slamed the gas pedal. three wheels popped up off the ground and when i landed i hit black ice. gripped solid ground whipping it around and caused me to take out 3 fence post (electric fence) and into a cow pasture. busted front bumper, left turn signal, grill and driver side fender. after getting the explorer out with wont engage in drive/over drive, 4x4 high, reverse, 1st or 2nd. drove the 1.5 miles in low 4x4. got it home and assested the damage. high pitched grinding when i put into any other gear other than 4x4 low. and after retesting the problems i lost park. so at the moment shes parked and i am wondering how to proceed.

Worn shift rail bores, you need to rebuild the transfer case. Look up in the stickies at the BW4405 thread.
 






Also check the trans shift cable and all electrical connectors as part of the fence may have pulled connectors or wire off, also may have damaged the shift cable.

Why does everything work fine in 4 Low then?
 






Unless he made a mistake, he said it wouldn't engage in drive overdrive, etc. If he meant that all transmission gears work when in 4 low, then yes the transfer case is damaged.
 






Yeah, probably needs an enhanced shift fork, HI/LOW collar, and bushings in the case halves. Might as well put a seal kit in it too.
 






Yes my thinking was that "getting the explorer out" involved low. It probably hadn't been in low recently. The shift rail bores had worn enough that it was holding in high but when switch to low and then back to high the shift fork wasn't holding the high/low collar in high anymore.
 






I have had mine pop out twice, both times highway speed, cresting a hill beginning to coast BAM whirrrrrr...chewed up two collars that way. Had to use 4LOW to get out of the roadway.
