dumping gas still

i have an 1997 explorer XL 4.0L "X" vin code. I have replaced the fuel injectors, plugs, wires, all upper intake gasgets and it still runs like crap
the gas smell isn't as bad but it is still dumping gas i even had to replace the hole muffler system from front to back over $1K any help would be great i am at lost with this one thanks in advance

I think you need to explain a little better. What do you mean by dumping gas? Is there a leak somewhere? Or, is the system running very rich?

ok by dumping gas i mean you can smell gas as the truck is running and there are no leaks and at this point no codes so i am at my witts end here and it is dumping so much gas at one point it melted the coverter that is why i am into the muffler system for over $1k

Well, could be a bad intake air temp sensor or coolant temp sensor, also possible MAF sensor too.

You have a 97 so likely have the returnless fuel system rather than the older return line with the vaccuum controlled fuel regulator which was phased out in 96. On the older system a bad fuel pressure regulator or broken vaccuum line to it could constantly flood the system with too much gas.

Since you arent getting any codes, I would suspect you have a bad engine tempature sensor. When the engine is cold the IAC acts as a choke and makes the system run rich until it warms up. This would not produce a CEL. A malfunctioning temp sensor would show the engine constantly cold (like -20F) to the computer leading to lots of extra gas. The IAC itself could also be faulty without throwing a CEL.

I think 97 is still return type fuel system. You should check the fuel pressure regulator mounted to the front of the passenger side of the fuel rail. Pull the vacuum hose to it and check to see if it smells like gas, or is wet.


If this checks out you need to check the wire harness for shorts, causing the injectors to remain on-or possibly a bad PCM.

Well lets see the temp gage works and runs in the normal range andthe idel does go down to normal when it warms ups so does that mean it is not the temp gage ? i checked for leaks in the return lines and replaced 2 of them because they were questionble as for shorts in the wires i wiggled every wire in this truck and nothing changed cleaned every ground, plug i have been trying to figure this out from oct of last year as for the injectors remaining open i have no idea and the computer has been replaced as well thanks for all the help and information

Dash runs off the only the coolant temp sensor. IAC runs on the air temp and coolant so you may want to check the other sensor before ruling it out.

get some sort of run data collector that tells you what the trims and such are so you can at least understand what the computer "thinks" its seeing and doing. From there, the data may help the forum understand what you are up against. IF you are dumping that much fuel, my guess is you have a compression issue.
