Here I am headin' dont to Richmond to help the fiance' pack the house.
Less than 20 miles into the trek I get a CEL, and the engine dies. I hit the hazzards and nurse it over to the sholder. I try to restart and it turns and turns and nothing. Pop the hood and see and smell nothing out of the norm.

I plug in my scan tool and I am getting ZERO from the ECM. I turn the key off and then back on and it fires right up. CEL is gone. Ran various functions through the scan tool and every thing reads normal.

I sit there and let it run for about ten mineuts and no issue. I call the Shel and tell her I really should stay home and figure this thing out :( I didnt want to risk it breaking down in the middle of BFE or what have you.
I drive back home and have no issue no trouble what so ever.

Any clues ?

***Edit*** there were NO stored codes.

Kevin, did you check the connection of the main harness at the ECM?

Good luck my friend ....

Yup
it is bolted in place
My only thought is the Bama Chip may have slipped off

You have an actual chip and not a programmer?

If so, pull the ECM and check the connection.

Good luck ....

I'll be doing that in the monring

also check the fuses for the ECU, i wired up my electric fan an didn't realize the note about when you don't use their switch, well i fried the one diode on the control box an it allowed the fan to pull from the ecu relay an it blew the fuse. scared the sh*t outta me because i didn't have a CEL light when i turn the truck to on. Did you have the ECU light when you turn the ignition to on? anyways, id just check all the fuses relays and connectors. also, check that damn chip too...:P

hey, long time no talk also, where have you been?

pulled the ECM, the chip is well secured with gaffers tape ( if you know gaffers tape you know that stuff is pretty much the ultimate )

No corrosion, dirt or dust.
70 some miles, two days later, the problem has not reoccoured.

Adam,
Ah you know selling a house, buying a house, getting married, adopting a kid.
Same ol' same ol'

Completely off topic, where do you get your gaffer tape? I've looked all over for it. I really don't want to have to order some off the internet.

Kevin-
Check the connections to the PCM relay--
Mine did just this--it was loose plugs where the relay "plugs " in. I disassembled the power distribution box to tighten the spade connectors--
Also-I suspect the same thing can develop to the PCM fuses.

The locations are in your owners manual--good luck

good tip JT
I'll look into that.

Todd, I just started my last roll. I used to have a case from back in the production days.
Look in your local pages for sound companies or theatrical lighting places or production companies. That stuff is expensive.
Think 12 to 16 dollars a roll.
I always got mine from Markertec.com

Check the power distro box, I had the same problem and corrosion on the relay and diode legs caused problems, if it does it again try hitting the box while starting it.

My friends diablo chip had connection issues on his 5.0 X. Every once in a while the engine would just die without warning. He would jiggle it a little and then it would finally start up again.

I am begining to think Aldive was right  chips do suck... I have one as well and have suspicitions about the connection to the ECM, especially since the directions from Diablosport say you have to clean the chip real well with an Alcohol swab before you install it.

Anyway I had this problem with a Toyota turbo I once owned, I was cruising along at 70mph on the highway and it just died. Had it towed to the dealer who discovered that the Harness came loose from the ECU and killed the engine.

It has got to be in the connection signal somewhere.

Yeah I am pretty sure the chip is NOT the issue. It is well secured with gaffers tape.

I am thinking the harness at the distro block might have been the yet to reocoour culprate

I diagnosed mine by starting the motor with the distro box removed and the bottom cover off and moving wires around until the motor stumbled or died.
