Engine Compartment Cleaning

Guys, I would like to tap the immense wealth of knowledge here on the forum to help me tackle cleaning my engine & engine compartment. In the old days it was open the hood, spray on some Gunk Engine Degreaser and let the spray rip. Clean engine and compartment every time! That was before electronic ignition and all the computer stuff.

I guess I'm asking for tips and tricks, what to look out for, what NOT to get wet, etc. My engine and compartment are filthy and probably have never been cleaned since new. The OP never even cleaned the interior so you can imagine what the engine and compartment look like.

I use Simple Green. Spray it on a cool/warm engine. Avoid the coil packs and air filter (if exposed) and then rinse with a light spray. Works great and takes little time.

Thanks man. When I was in the Marine Corps we used simple green for everything. I never heard of it but that stuff was amazing. I'll give it a go and report results.

The air filter is not exposed so I only have to look out for the coil packs? I guess I follow the plugs wires from the plugs to the coil packs?

I see now you have a 3rd gen. Not sure how those are setup, but concepts are the same. Try and keep your ignition dry. I really keep the rinse to a minimum. Simple Green lifts and removes quickly.

I will probably attempt this this week and let you know how I make out. Every time I open the hood I am repulsed at the filth.
