i have a 93 xplorer with 176,000miles. i get about 12mpg on gas. i use regular oil 10w-30 and change it every 3000miles. is it too late to use synthetic oil and would it improve my gas mileage?

Definately not to late to start using it. The gas mileage thing is a bit shaky, though. I didn't see a bump in GPM using synthetic, don't know if you will either. As for your 12mpg - there's tons of threads on here dealing with bad mpg, search around for them and try out some of those suggestions.

Mobil1 5w30. Mobil1 is the only real over the counter fully synthetic pao based oil that I am aware of. The rest are really group III oils from what I have heard. Change every 6,000 or so. 78,000 miles and nary a hiccup. Never moves from the full mark either.

Exactally how much I don't know but enough to notice.

How much is amsoil and do they have thier own special filters or do you just use a regular one. I usually change my oil at 3,000 to 4,000 miles with castrol syntec blend.

i have been using the Ford specified 5w-30 shell helix part synthetic which has now been changed to 10w-30 shell helix and i change it every 5,000km's this way the engine oil is always clean and the gas milage is always consistant giving me on average 550kms per 80 litres of fuel (full tank).

I'm lucky if i can get 450km to a tank.


I change my filter every 5,000km and oil every 10,000km.. I use Mobil 1 5w30
