I have a '96 4.0L 4-door XLT that's experiencing some ignition/engine issues. It acts like a cylinder is missing off and on, but the plugs check out, even changed them anyway. Wires also OK. Check engine light is not coming on. I've also noticed that the oil pressure drops a bit when it misses and then come back up, for a jumping needle effect. Engine and trans have 210K miles on them both with no rebuild.

Anyway, I wanted to know if there's something obvious I'm missing, or am I looking at rebuild time already? If so, should I just bring it to a local engine rebuilder shop or maybe look at replacing then engine and trans? (Did I mention the Trans was setting a code before about overdrive solenoid stuck open too long, but I drained and changed the filter and now seems ok?)
I've always wanted to put a '97+ SOHC and 5-speed auto tranny, but I need to consider costs.

Welcome home!
I would start by cleaning the IAC valve
Search those words, you'll get lots of info.

Good luck,

Oh, and if after awhile you save some money, at least consider an elite membership.
