Is it common practice to use the old valve train and lifters etc. on a short block rebuild? Only just occurred to me because of possible wear pattern. Can I just use new rods?

If it was me and I was rebuilding my motor I would put all new parts in not reuse old parts..

Depends partly on the mileage. The 4.0 valvetrain can go for a lot of miles but it's best to change the wear items. The rocker arms and pushrod tips usually wear and cause valvetrain noise, plus you are sacrificing some power. Lifters can be re-used if they are in good shape. You will want to freshen up the heads; at the very least, do a valve job so you are not wasting the refreshed bottom end on a leaky top end.

I've owned vehicles before where the bottom end was refreshed and the top end left stock; they didn't run real well and left a lot of power on the table. I have also owned vehicles where the bottom end was left stock and the top end was refreshed, and the motor felt very healthy overall. The 4.0 has a strong bottom end and doesn't usually wear out easily.

welp, moved while the engine was in pieces, valve train, rods and lifters MIA. looking for new discount code for rock. don't recall seeing fully assembled rocker arms there.

lifters, piecing together a valvetrain.....

At that point it would probably be better to find a good used motor and keep it going. You will spend 3x more replacing all the missing pieces and machine work put together.

point of no return my friend. short blk and heads, done deal. only valve train missing.

Here's a 5% discount code good till 6/30 supposedly. I checked and it works right now. 2129683319199854

need some input on this first pic, is that off too much. no start on rebuild. spark is there, pump not priming. not good with the multimeter, but i do have 1. relays clicking, switched them up. second pic is the way i got the block.

check the two big plugs by the altenator make sure they are plugged all the way in

Close only counts in Horse Shoes and Hand Grenades and Atomic Warfare.

Dots have to be dead on for the cam to be in sync and the cam sensor to work correctly.

However from the first picture it looks like if you turn just a little more they might line up.

I'm sure it's done after three years!
