A while ago my wife totaled her 2001 Ex v8 2wd, only 130K on it. Sucks. The used care market sucks, anything with low miles is $5k plus and at that cheap the interior is pretty shot. At any rate I picked up a pretty good 2000 v6 OHV 4wd. My plan is to pull the v8 & tranny and swap it over. I know the ECU is paired to the GEM unit so I'm going to need both those and the ignition key assembly with the sensor, etc. What else do I need to pull out. I'm trying to pull everything I need then send the shell to scrap, so I want to make sure I've got everything I need. Anything else I need to know? Are the tranny lengths the same? So the drive shafts & xfer case will still fit?
Thanks for the direction.

Is the 2000 drivetrain shot? Do you have the room to store the V8 driveline?

I’d strip the V8 truck down, keep what you need, and drive that 2000 until something gives. The OHV is a stout motor.

Then do the swap. May as well get the miles out of the truck as-is

You need from the 5.0 (aside from the complete
Drivetrain)

the throttle Cable
The power steering high pressure hose
The exhaust from headers back to tailpipe
Engine mounts
Trans mount
Radiator
V8 computer, ignition key and tumbler should also grab the door and tailgate
Locks so the key Matches

I’ve done this a few times

Nothing from that v6 will fit the 5.0’except the fuel line and some vacuum lines
The wiring will plug right in

But you will still need the v8 trans, t case, driveshafts, exhaust, basically the entire drivetrain and all wiring and plumbing associated with it

The 2000 4.0 ohv engine is very desirable if it’s in good shape I collect all the pushrod engines I can get

I am definitely not in a hurry to do this swap. The v6 is around 250K miles and I think it's burning some oil, how long do these pushrods last?

To confirm, the tranny on the v8 sits back farther, so the driveshafts & xFer case is not compatible v6 to v8?

No. You can’t use any of the running gear between the axles.

...What else do I need to pull out....
Depending on available room and proximity to population center(s), perhaps consider stripping any parts of value? Can help out fellow ex (etc.) owners and put some coin back in your pocket.

I have definitely been doing that.

Also you bought a 4WD truck, where do you live, can you do without the 4WD? It would take more work to convert the truck to AWD with the 302 engine etc. To make it 2WD you can swap out just the front spindles(remove the front diff and axles obviously) and get an alignment, and be done.

To make it 4WD(AWD for the 302's), you would have to buy an AWD transfer case, the front driveshaft(V8 and V6 are a couple of inches different), the GEM module(the non 4WD unit), plus the trans would have to come apart to swap the output shaft and tail housing. If you see any snow then you'd likely want the AWD instead of 2WD.

I still have my old 93 OHC V6, with 112,622 miles, who needs it?

Don't forget the PATS module behind the dash. It's behind the passenger airbag on the firewall. I'm actually surprised @410Fortune missed that in his list.

With out this, you can't complete the PATS triangle. Computer, Chipped Key, PATS Module. The truck will never start with out this.

Ditto, I also forgot to mention that. He posted GEM in the beginning, it's the PATS and PCM that have to match, with the key codes. The GEM has to be swapped also because it's 4WD and he won't have that in the new truck. He also has to remove the 4WD and TOD modules, which are also tied to the 4WD GEM circuits. The TOD is to the right of the radio, 4WD is left and other side of the dash structure, you get to it from below the column.

Yep need the pats
Module to go with the key/tumbler and pcm whoopsies

I’m surprised I didn’t mention that also! Lol

The v6 truck is 4wd but the 5.0 donor is rwd?
That makes things interesting

I need pushrod 4.0’s for sure especially if they are 98-2000 pushrods
I build rangers w either a 4.0 or a 5.0 and they are getting harder to find. If engine was close enough I’d snatch it up
