My check engine light has been on for about a year. It was diagnosed as a bad evap vent solenoid, and the estimate was to replace the evap canister, evap vent solenois, vapor menagement vale, for close to $300. I was told it would affect my gas mileage (I've notice about a mile/gallon decrease), but it wasn't critical. I decided it was less expensive to buy more gas. I've got 96k miles on the vehicle, and intend to keep driving it for at least another year (hopefully more). Am I risking anything major by leaving this unrepaired? Does anyone know how complicated a repair it is (if I can't do it, I have a friend that might be able to help...alternative is a quote of $150.00 labor & $135 in parts).

First of all, which engine do you have? This will be for the 4.0 OHV, which is the most common engine... that estimate is not out of the question, as that evap vent solenoid is underneath your upper intake, and from personal experience, it takes a decent amount of time to pull off and reinstall. The most of that cost is going to be labor time.

What that solenoid and evap system does, is this: the vapors that collect on the top of your fuel tank go through a hose to the evap canister which is under your hood. When the engine is warmed up, the evap solenoid (under the upper intake) opens up, and through a hose attached to the same canister, pulls those vapors in and burns them off. It's more emissions related. Not neccessarily performance.

You aren't going to really do any damage to anything by leaving it like that for a while, the only problem you'll run into is when it comes time to test the emissions, they will probably see the "check engine" and deny you immediately.

Also, why would this technician feel it necessary to replace the evap canister? As far as I've seen on my 1994 XL (not the same, but similar) my evap canister doesn't have anything to go bad, unless you physically have a hole in it. I bet that you just need the solenoid. I think that's about $80 from Ford.

Let me know if I helped and what else I can answer for you. I've tackled a mountain of crud on my Explorer and the only things left are the front calipers, and to pin down an idle issue. anyhoo....

take care

George

We need to know what engine you have.
the 96 trucks have a couple of canister purge valves and the evap system is mostly located back by the tank.

Have you tried re-setting the battery and see if the code disappears?
