Exhaust Studs vs. Bolts

I just removed my exhaust manifold from my 96 Explorer with 5.0L engine. I got all 6 bolts out and both studs. I have ordered a replacement Dorman manifold.
My questions are: Why the studs and bolts? Am I OK to replace all of the studs and bolts with new grade 8 bolts only? The Dorman exhaust shows it comes with the manifold gasket and two bolts - are these the bolts that go in the exhaust pipe connection?

are you talking about the down pipe? like that connects the manifold to the rest of the exhaust? i thought that had bolts and nuts behind it from the factory? if so your new kit should have came with 2 nuts as well
ill look under my truck after work and get a better answer though and if that is the case i think there is 2 for each side.
