i'm not sure where the best place to post this question is; i'm going to try one or two different forums.

i owned a 97 explorer (4.0 v6) for about a decade until i just got tired of fixing it after the third time i cracked a head.

i bought a 99 expedition (5.4 v8) as an upgrade, and have since totaled it, though the engine is salvageable.

i want to try to drop the engine (and trans?) into my old explorer. can i do this? will it fit? would i need to fabricate mounts? will the trans work with the existing driveshaft? general thoughts? any direction will be appreciated.

Custom mounts def. The fact of the motor width and other design differences might not even fit between the frame rails. Custom driveshaft wiring etc is all a must as well. The engine bay on 5.0s are very tight as it is...

With the easy availability and relatively cheap cost, you'd be better off parting out he expedition and dropping in a 5.0. At least then, all the hard work of making it fit has already been done.

The short answer is no. You would be better off finding a replacement engine for your explorer, or finding a junked 5.0 explorer for a 5.0 swap.

well damn. thanks for the help then, guys. better heading off complete failure before i get in too deep.

Ever seen how big a 5.4 block is compared to a 4.0? The 4.0 looks like a scale model lol

Part out the expedition and Explorer and you could probably pick up a 2nd gen w/ a 5.0.

Those 5.4's with the PI heads can command a good amount of money on the used parts market.

Really though, width is the problem. If it were just a question of size, you can fit a GM 6.5 liter diesel engine in the engine bay of a second gen and still have a little room to spare, and they are fairly close in size to a 454.
