I am looking at buying another explorer with the 4.0 sohc and i was wondering is the sohc better than the ohv. My first ex with the ohv ran good and i have heard some stories about the timing chains going out frequently on the sohc. Just wondering what peoples thoughts were between the two. Thank you.

Your probably going to want to do a search, as the "OHV vs SOHC" subject has many many threads on it.

But basically, the bottom line is if you want ultimate reliability, low end torque (towing) and simplicity, go with the OHV. If you want more of a cruiser, efficiency or power go with the SOHC, but be conscious as to if the timing chain issue/recall was addressed or not already.

a few threads;

SOHC has more power (50hp)
OHV has reliability.

I have owned both...actually I have 2 SOHC, and OHV currently.

I did not know they were recalled, Stic-o is the JP a sohc.

no JP (1999) is one of the last OHV's . 2000 was the last official year of the OHV, but they are super rare. Jefe had a OHV in his 2000 XLT.

Sweet i like the sohc power but i think im going to stick with the ohv i beat the cr@p out of my 93 and sucked a few gallons of pond water through it and it still ran great. I was reading on this forum and some google searches obout the sohc and it looks like it pretty much has to many issues that can go wrong with it. Besides the ohv has alot of mods you can do to the ohv to make up for power. I still have some engine quest 95tm heads i never used for my 93 i can use.
